Spanish embarrassed by Goth daughters of Prime Minister with the Obamas?

http://gawker.com/5368039/spains-goth-first-daughters-embarrass-embarrassed-by-dad

<snip>
Here's Barack and Michelle Obama with Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and his family. The State Department uploaded it to Flickr. (What an unlikely sentence!) Whoops—no one in Spain has ever seen Zapatero's Goth daughters before!

According to Zapatero, Spanish law allows him to prevent the Spanish media from running any photographs of his 16 and 13-year-old daughters Laura and Alba. For their privacy, see. And because maybe it would be considered weird for the PM to have goth daughters, but it totally shouldn't be. It is a natural part of life, becoming a teenaged goth.

3. I like how the daughter on the far right is leaning in...
like its family photo and they are all trying to squeeze into the frame.

I think the photos hilarious. I don't really give a shit about the fact that they are goth.

4. I think they will grow up to be very beautiful women.
Though teenagers have a mind, and style, of their own, I always got around any possible embarrassment by offering to buy a new dress for the occasion.

Despite my eldest's gothic ways, she couldn't resist wearing a pretty new dress that flattered her figure.

5. why be embarrassed?
the spanish kind of need to get over themselves. the superiority complexes of the spaniards that i've met in mexico is ridiculous and that people are getting worked up over this is just silly.

(note: i am a woman whose mother used to be embarrassed to be seen in public events with me during spring and summer months, as i'm covered with tattoos and prone to shaving my head-luckily, she got over herself too)

8. Really? That's too bad. I lived in Madrid and had such a great experience, but was constantly
told that I spoke like a Mexican.
Well, when I returned to Texas and visited my Mexican grandmother, the first thing she said to me was ,"my god, emily. You talk like a damn Spaniard."
It was hilarious.

Do you live in Mexico, by the way?

15. I do for parts of the year...
I'm working on my dissertation.

My husband loved Spain too, and said the people were great. The Spanish people in Mexico were sort of another story.

7. Indeed they do. In Madrid, the entire neighborhood of Malasaña and parts of Chueca are like one
great big Hot Topic.

9. and if they were in short skirt and blouses wiht their cleavage showing...
people would bitch too. They're totally covered, no outrageous make up. Just black dresses, stockings and shoes. What's the freaking problem? Would it be better if they were drunk, falling down and their panties showing?

16. Hmmm. Who does that sound like?
The universality of teen-hood is somehow reassuring. Some parents (mine) would have said 'You're not going looking like that!'

11. He should be proud
Edited on Tue Sep-29-09 07:14 AM by justanaverageguy
I am a father of two boys (6 and 8) and if the worst I have to deal with when they are teens is a bad haircut and weird clothing choices I will count myself lucky.

Their father should be proud. If he's not, he's a dick

13. Leave these kids alone
Isn't it refreshing to see a normal family in politics for a change - Obama's family included.
I'm sure Michelle and Barack totally understand how two teenaged daughters may want express a little individuality.

We could probably take a poll and find that parents who have or had teenagers are much more understanding about the choice of clothes.

Maybe that's more "eccentric" in Spain than here, I don't know. They don't even look that goth.

And like someone said above: Pick your battles. (At least they showed up for the picture, which is more than I would've done at that age...heh.)
