Health Insurance Companies are exempted from the Sherman Act?

Health Insurance companies are the only companies, besides Major League Baseball, that are legally exempted from the Sherman Antitrust Act.

This is being discussed on MSNBC's "Morning Meeting" right now.

On the right, they are saying, why not change that instead of a public option? The health insurance game has been rigged this way and is what is causing a strangle-hold on health care costs.

Mentioned that an amendment to change this status for Health Insurance companies has been blocked (not sure what amendment that was).

They are attacking HR 3200, the SHELP bill and the Baucus bill for having a mandate in conjunction with this issue. Calling it the biggest flaw of the current reform bills.

Make the insurers subject to Sherman AND
include a strong public option.
