Egypt anger over virginity faking

A leading Egyptian scholar has demanded that people caught importing a female virginity-faking device into the country should face the death penalty.

Abdul Mouti Bayoumi said supplying the item was akin to spreading vice in society, a crime punishable by death in Islamic Sharia law.

The device is said to release liquid imitating blood, allowing a female to feign virginity on her wedding night.

There is a stigma about pre-marital sex in conservative Arab societies.

The contraption is seen as a cheap and simple alternative to hymen repair surgery, which is carried out in secret by some clinics in the Middle East.

My initial "shout" doesn't even begin to address the contempt I feel towards societies (including our own) that continue to perpetuate this myth about "virginity". The whole concept is misogynistic to its core.

Men in these societies think of the hymen as some sort of "airtight tamper-proof seal" across a woman's vaginal passage. They think ONLY a penis can break it, and they think that when it does, there will ALWAYS be blood--rather like the dye pack banks put in stacks of money they give to robbers to stain their hands. Of course, this isn't true at all; hymens don't create a full airtight seal, they can be torn or broken in many ways other than sexual intercourse, and they don't always bleed when they break. But these idiots have it in their heads that they can know absolutely-for-sure who's a virgin by a) whether they need a battering ram to "breach the barricade" and b) whether or not there's blood. It's crazy.
