S.C. Gov. Sanford doesn't want ethics report released
Governor: Don't release ethics report
Lawmakers shouldn't see initial findings, he says
By JOHN O'CONNOR - joconnor@thestate.com

Gov. Mark Sanford has asked the South Carolina Supreme Court to block a state ethics panel investigating the governor from releasing its initial findings to lawmakers who could decide to remove him from office.

Sanford, who vowed to fight "tooth and nail" any effort to remove him from office, argues that releasing the report to lawmakers could be used for political purposes and could compromise his defense.

Sanford argues that only prosecutorial bodies can gain access to the State Ethics Commission's preliminary report, which is akin to an indictment and does not contain the governor's full defense.

The Ethics Commission maintains that the S.C. House would become a prosecutor, and therefore entitled to the report, if it opens impeachment proceedings against Sanford.

Sanford has been under scrutiny since returning from a secret five-day trip to Argentina in June and admitting to an extramarital affair with a woman who lives there.

1. Wayward republicans are like stubborn stains that just won't come out.
They fight tooth and nail to avoid taking responsibility for their vile acts. Disgusting!

9. What's the general consensus in SC
regarding him now? Do people want him to do the right thing and step down, or are they circling the wagons around him?

5. gee ... what's he have to fear?
I mean, isn't the GnOPe the ones who say "Read the bill!" when it comes to all kinds of stuff?

Aren't they the ones who, before 1/20/2001 and after 1/19/2009, said that "Nobody, not even the President, is above the law?" (even during a war!)

7. If the Supreme Court has any moxie . . .
Their ruling on Mr. Sanford's motion should be "Nice try. Get a better lawyer and prepare whatever pathetic defense you have cooked up."

8. "He Who Must Not Be Named Because All Are Sick Of Reading About Him & His Explaining''
will be harder to get rid of than fire ants and kudzu combined. The legislature can spend the next session trying to
do something positive for a change or fight with him. Even if they impeach him, he will pull shenanigans with his lawyers, and have to be physically carried out of his office.

Then he will wander around the state whining and complaining. He just formed the S.C. Interagency Transportation Coordination Council, which will help transportation agencies streamline their operations and collaborate more effectively.

He should start looking at his own transportation.
