(Indiana) Church Erects (Pro-gay) Billboards About Love...in the Biblical Sense
Edited on Mon Apr-16-07 06:49 PM by IanDB1
Congregations never more awake during sermons

Who knew biblical times were so decadent (not to mention ruthless, carnal and violent)? Well, most people, actually.

But did you know it was possible to proudly proclaim your love for a same-sex partner then? Didn't think so.

The Jesus Metropolitan Church didn't think you did, either, but they're getting out the Good Word in a big way all around Indianapolis, Indiana with billboards proclaiming that Jesus affirmed a gay couple, David loved Jonathan "more than women" and three more fun facts.

Even better than the billboards themselves is the fact that each one cites sources—biblical sources, no less! And you know what that means: it has to be true.

The same Hebrew word that is used in Genesis 2:24 to describe how Adam felt about Eve (and how spouses are supposed to feel toward each other) is used in Ruth 1:14 to describe how Ruth felt about Naomi. Her feelings are celebrated, not condemned.

And throughout Christian history, Ruth's vow to Naomi has been used to illustrate the nature of the marriage covenant. These words are often read at Christian wedding ceremonies and used in sermons to illustrate the ideal love that spouses should have for one another. The fact that these words were originally spoken by one woman to another tells us a lot about how God feels about same-gender relationships.

6. Wow!
Indiana is a very conservative state, I wonder how many fundy heads will explode on their way to work. I know this is around Indianapolis, which isn't as conservative as the state as a whole, but from the little time I spent in the Terre Haute area, this is quite a pleasant surprise.

7. Thank you! I am sending this to my favorite Christian scholar
who preaches this idea as often as he can! I love that it is in Indianapolis--a place that has grown more, rather than less, progressive in recent years. But it is going to raise some eyebrows, I imagine--heeheehee.

8. Broken picture link, guys!
Maybe if you could save the picture of the billboard to your own web site space and link to that. I know it's a pain, but that's the way the Web works.

10. That is so awesome

...Heck, I think in the least we should quit judging gay people and let them live their lives how they see fit. And there is no doubt in my mind it's not a choice. Once we can prove it (we'll be able to with genetics), once we PROVE "God" has made some people gay. Just like proof that the earth was not flat, it will send them back under their rocks until the next boogeyman can be concocted.

I am not gay, but I've never once heard of a gay person dragging a straight person behind his truck or beating up a straight person. Shit, maybe we need more gay people.
