Do you identify as a "moderate"? if so...

Could you respond to this thread with a short list of 5 principles that you hold as core to your value system?

Not necessarily the "top 5". I think it would be really interesting (for me) to try and get an idea of what underpins the views of the moderates on this board.

Thank you.

4. I try to respect people who respect and understand me
Edited on Sat Oct-17-09 08:52 PM by xultar
I respect the dead even though I may not have agreed with them when they were alive. I guess the respect is more for the family and friends experiencing the loss

I try to understand other peoples point of view even those I don't agree with.

I don't like dissing democrats just because I may not agree with them.

I try to have fun and laugh. I think sometimes the purists take themselves way to seriously. Laughter heals...

I consider myself a moderate though I'm for gay marriage and single payer.

1. Stuff in the middle is cool. Think Oreos and lasagna.

2. I like the way the fence feels on my butt when I straddle it.

3. Thinking is hard.

4. Is moderate like moderator? 'Cause the mods are cool!

5. Alternatively, mods were also cool.

9. It would have been nice of you to define moderate, but here are mine.
(1) It will not yell fire in a crowded theater, unless there is a fire. Free speech does not justify violating public safety.
(2) I do not own a firearm and will not allow anyone to carry a firearm onto my property unless that person is a duly authorized officer of the local, state, or federal authorities. And he'd better have a court order or probable cause to be there. I will evict violators of this rule, by force.
(3) I hold that some wars are necessary, but all wars are stupid, immoral, and unjust. That is the nature of war.
(4) I accept the scientific evidence of evolution but respect everyones right to their own delusions about the origins of life, so long as they don't attempt to foist them on my children.
(5) I believe that all citizens have a civic responsibility to their government; to pay taxes, follow laws, to come the common defense when necessary.

I consider myself a moderate liberal or a moderate progressive.

So what are you?

10. I believe that the definition of a moderate is what this exercise
is all about. The OP poster is asking both self-described liberals and self-described to post their views in order to determine why people consider themselves liberal or moderate.

Personally, I USED to consider myself a moderate or a centrist, but apparently from tests on Political Compass and similar sites I am now considered a liberal. Even though my views haven't changed. I guess the political spectrum has shifted.

16. The political scale is relative. It changes over time.
I know real Conservatives, my brother is one, and he considers himself a moderate and me a radical leftist.

I believe that there should be more laws over gun ownership. There are many second amendment liberals here at DU that would not consider me a liberal at all.

Hell, I think that most police officers are honest public servants and using a Taser is a good idea considering the alternative. Some think that my stand on that makes me a radical conservative.

But real conservatives consider themselves the center, and while Bush was President the power the political center was way to the right of my position. With Obama, the political center has moved back left a short distance. (We can only hope for more.)

I have a political dictionary published by Oxford University that defines both Liberal and Progressive. The definitions are not simple. But it doesn't define moderate. So people will have to read what I wrote and decide for themselves what I am.

I think asking for people who think of themselves as Left of Center or Political center would have been more precise.

12. Along with the "do you identify as a conservative" OP this sounds like the Lounge.
Not knocking the Lounge because there are generally more reasonable people there than here at GD.

And intended seriously. The others are copycats and non-serious, and might be Lounge material, but why this one?

19. Serious or not, it is the Lounge formula and most there are copycats as well.
So even if the original post was serious it tends to make a joke and a mockery of it.

20. elocs, I have the feeling we are talking at cross-purposes.

do you actually want this thread moved to the Lounge (which I had assumed you did, because you thought it wasn't serious) or is it merely the case that it's "copycat" nature REMINDS you of the Lounge?

21. It reminds me of the Lounge where at the same time similarly worded threads are posed
at the same time and so they tend not to be taken seriously. There at times you might see 4 threads posted at the same time which are worded exactly the same except with one word changed or twisted or made silly.
