Rev. Al Sharpton to sue Rush Limbaugh over Wall Street Journal op-ed
Edited on Sun Oct-18-09 12:33 AM by Cash_thatswhatiwant

The Rev. Al Sharpton is ready for a Rush to judgment.

The civil rights leader, typically impervious to insults, said Saturday that he will sue Rush Limbaugh for defamation unless he gets an apology from the right-wing radio host.

Sharpton was outraged by a Limbaugh op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal that blamed him for the 1991 Crown Heights riot and a 1995 killing spree at a Harlem store.

"I am definitely going to prove he makes reckless, unaccountable statements," Sharpton said. "Which is why he was forced out of buying an NFL team in the first place."

Limbaugh lashed out at Sharpton over the right-wing radio host's failed attempt to purchase a piece of the St. Louis Rams. Sharpton, among others, blasted Limbaugh's bid for NFL ownership.

Limbaugh replied in his op-ed piece that Sharpton "played a leading role in the 1991 Crown Heights riot ... and 1995 Freddie's Fashion Mart riot."

1. He has zero chance of winning...
Sharpton is a public figure. In this country it is near impossible for him to win. He would basically have to have audio, video, or email proof that Limbaugh knew the statement was false but decided to make it anyway. no chance.

/someone will crap on me for pointing out the truth. watch.

6. Winning is not the point.
Public perception is. This will never go to trial. But it'll force bRush to defend his statements, and likely he'll dig a deeper hole for himself. Sharpton knows how to work publicity, and he's got a thick skin. I think he's doing this intentionally. Using it as an opportunity to "call him out" (bRush that is).

9. Sharpton has no credibility and large judgements against him are still pending payment
This is a media farce and nothing more.

14. maybe according to you
but whether you like it or not, his words hold sway with a large group of people. I remember the Tawana Brawley fiasco, i lived on LI at the time... this is not the same man. He has since then been better about curtailing his bombastic nature, and has grown as an advocate for the poor and disenfranchised.

I agree that it is a media farce. What i'm saying is that it is intentional on the Rev's part, and that though i might take exception to his tactics at times, he does appear to understand the nature of using the media to his advantage.

20. He is a flawed instrument at best. His personal ethics remain very questionable
Since he still refuses to apologize for his actions or pay the judgment in the Brawley case, I can not see how you can consider him a changed man.

2. There is no up-side for Rush in this contest.
Even if he wins the case, he further cements himself as a foe of the black community, just by contesting it.

3. In the words of Arthur Fonzarelli --
"Exactamundo, Cunningham!"

Rush has painstakingly and lovingly built his own prison. Sharpton is merely asking him when it's okay to lose the key.

5. The up side for the Anal Cyst is face time in the national news
People who make their money by selling advertising will seek out face time in the news, weather it is good or bad, because it helps them sell. The bad news / good news aspect makes no difference if it attracts more people to Limbaugh's program where he charges for advertising by the number of listeners. The man has no soul because he has sold out completely in the pursuit of money

Sharpton can push back.

7. Personally I hope Sharpton does some serious pushing
Once pigBOY starts fighting back his bigotry and hatred for anything that isn't limbaugh will be so blatant that his ditto heads will have to take notice. Pedophile pillBOY is on his way out and it won't be long before he crosses the line, hell he's already crossed the line many times but it's getting close to where his bull shit smell will be too strong to ignore any longer.

10. No one takes him seriously nor should they
He is yet to pay the judgments against him or his campaign debts.

Take that sorry excuse for human flesh to the cleaners.

Ed to add: He likes to boast that he has twenty million Shittoheads listeners so that ought to make damages worth at least ten bucks a head. :eyes:

12. Rush in the WSJ...lordy, lordy.
I remember when the Wall Street Journal was a respected publication.
Back in my 'active' investor days I was a regular subscriber.
I don't remember when the editorial side took such a hard right tack.
Maybe it was always there to a degree, and I just wasn't paying attention.
But Limbaugh?
jeez

Next is Beck, I guess.

He probably won't win, but if it causes Rash Limpballs personal discomfort, this is a good thing.

19. Limbaugh won't apologize for this, and Sharpton can't win the suit.
I'm not sure if he'll actually sue or not. Given what it will cost, I imagine he won't.
