Somali Islamists publicly whip bra-wearing women
Somali Islamists publicly whip bra-wearing women

Somalia's hardline Islamist group al Shabaab -- which seeks to impose a strict form of sharia Islamic law in Somalia -- has publicly whipped women for wearing bras they say violate Islam by constituting a deception, residents said yesterday.

The residents said gunmen had been rounding up any woman seen with a rm bust and then had them publicly whipped by masked men. The women were then told to remove their bras and shake their breasts.

Officials of Al Shabaab, which is al-Qaida's proxy in the failed state, declined to comment.

2. I'm... confused... What?
There's just no part of my brain where this makes even a vague sort of "Crazy people" sort of sense.

I have to sit down now. Oi.

5. Remove your bras and shake your breasts?
Sounds like a titty bar to me.
I thought fundamentalists were against such things.

13. American women used to be persecuted for wearing makeup...
Only prostitutes, you know, wore... makeup...

When religion combines with social codes, this is what happens.

17. i would have put the Sarcasm icon in but sadly it is true.. i'm still sore from the whipping i got
from my last transgression... it takes some effort to find the truth and it often isn't pretty or politically correct.. search at Amazon, i get used books cheap.

12. +1
Cultural relativity, respect for misogyny because it is such a time honored tradition that anthropologists need to write some dissertations about to get a close look at the positives of beating women in a given, well-respected, perhaps superior culture. :sarcasm:

I wouldn't register as a Democrat for a long time (reg independent, not Repuke) because I worried that political correctness was more important to liberals than women's human rights. I was glad to find that there are liberals that care about women beyond the borders of the US.

16. I'm opposed to cultural relativity and by American standards I am on the far left.
Cultural relativity is an anathema. People who spout it are ideological drones incapable of thinking for themselves.

11. What jerks. Wearing bras is not about deceiving men. But the whole religion seems to think
everything in the world should revolve around them, so why not women's undergarments as well?

14. after my lumpectomy I was told to wear a bra (& he specified it must be no underwire)
Because the amount of tissue he took out and where meant a bra was needed to provide support that my breast no longer had on its own.

I have friends who are 'well endowed' and who feel more comfortable with the support a bra provides.

sigh... These hardline men claim moral superiority while forcing women to remove their bras and shake their titties for them?!?

:eyes:
