GM Employee Discount Pricing apparently to end
My Dad (GM retired) told me he received a letter from GM today announcing that the program would be ending. Can't find a news link except for the blog post below reporting the same thing.

Dad had been taking advantage of the employee discount since 1963. Depending on the class of car one bought, I believe the discount ranged from 20% -- maybe even as high as 25% -- to 15% off the MSRP. It was big enough of a discount that he could buy a new car every year without taking any serious losses on depreciation.

Blog excerpt:

"This is supposedly NOT a rumor, I heard that the GMS Program will be discontinued on January 5, 2010. GM hasn't announced this yet and wants to keep a lid on the program changes to avoid a rush for the next 6 weeks. This is a very costly program and GM is changing the discount to an "Employee Rebate" program which will offer discounts on "select" vehicles. A friend of mine works for a Detroit Area Chevy dealership and he said that the dealers are not allowed to advertise this at all."

1. Why should rank and file members enjoy discounts?
We must preserve any perks for the multi-million-dollar CEO's. :sarcasm:

2. Can't wait until this cell phone dufus gets tired on running GM into the ground...
This would be an utterly moronic move, if true.

3. Do you honestly believe you can't go to any dealership and get a 10% discount off of MSRP?
I certainly have! I always thought the discount was a lot more than that. IMO 10% is silch and not worth the fight! If you're talking about 25% we could have a deal.

6. I wrote 15%, not 10%
And 15% applied to the most inexpensive cars, if I recall correctly. That was in addition to factory incentives and rebates. I never partook in it (as a family member I was eligible) because for many years I didn't need a car -- that's why my recollection is a bit fuzzy.

4. Your dad was in management wasn't he?
My guess would be upper management. There was never that kind of employee discount for hourly workers that I am aware of.

5. He was a production supervisor
So yes, white collar management. I thought the employee discount was available to all union members.

7. Salaried employees received a better discount than hourly
Edited on Thu Dec-03-09 05:24 PM by NNN0LHI
And we didn't even start getting it until the late 70's or early 80's in one of our contracts.

Years before that though I spotted my doctor wandering around like he was lost in the front offices where I worked and I asked him, "What the fuck you doing here Doc?", and he said he was there to pick up his new car. He said they had some kind of discount for professional people at the plant. He didn't even have to go through a dealer. And that was long before we got our employee discount.

8. Wow -- I never knew
Now I remember -- it was called a "Class A" Discount. So it's logical to assume there was a classification system.
