Atheists are not allowed to hold office...
according to laws in some states.
http://www.religioustolerance.org/texas.htm
Looks like in 1961, the U.S. Supreme Court said these laws in all states were unconstitutiomal. Wonder why the laws are still on the books?

Here's why this caught my attention.

1. Wait...
A former local NAACP president likes to dress up as a flag waving confederate rebel? That should be a news article in itself. What a flippin' weirdo.

A gen-yew-wine Yankee-hating, Jim Crow loving, live and die in Dixie BLACK bitterender. No wonder they went to him for a comment on atheism, he's a fucking kook who'd make Alan Keyes nervous.

7. The laws are unconstitutional, but still on the books
The reason is that legislators don't want to put their names on the bill that "takes Gawd out of our state statutes." While it's the correct and proper thing to do, why risk pissing off a bloc of voters to formally repeal an unconstitutional law? The courts have taken care of the de jure part; no sense making waves.

Meanwhile, the nitwits in North Carolina who are invoking their state law to assuage their sore-loser bitterness will find out soon enough that their position has no basis in the law. I hope they spend a lot of money and that the majority of North Carolinians subject them to well-deserved ridicule.

12. Not much different from any other state
Everybody has their own local branch of the nitwit brigades. Hopefully, the more clear-thinking segments of the citizenry will subject them to the ridicule they deserve, and they can either smarten up or belt up.

9. If anyone needs more info, there's a thread in R/T on this:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=214x228443

Cecil Bothwell has been sworn in, unsurprisingly, since (1) he was unquestionably elected in very liberal Asheville, and (2) under long-established case law, there's no question the cited part of the NC constitution violates the Federal constitution

Note that H. K. Edgerton is a fringe African-American neo-confederate who was tossed from the NAACP more than a decade ago and who more recently quit his association with the wingnut SLRC after constant financial allegations from the white supremacists there
