"Are the `Progressives’ a front group for restrictive immigration?"-Sun Sentinel article
http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/news/politics/dcblog/2009/12/are_the_progressives_a_front_g_1.html

"A group (Progressives for Immigration Reform) of self-proclaimed progressives has brought a twist to the immigration-reform debate by arguing that rampant immigration hurts domestic workers by driving down wages."

"At first glance, this appears to be critique from the Left. However, liberal bloggers and some immigration advocates contend that these Progressives are a front-group for those who want to block real reform, especially the kind that gives unauthorized immigrants a path to citizenship. The group's vice president and one of its board members are associated with the Center for Immigration Studies, a long-standing opponent of comprehensive reform bills and an advocate for limiting immigration."

"The article comes as all sides of the immigration debate gear up for an expected confrontation in Congress next year. The issue is especially intense in Florida, home to an estimated 1 million illegal immigrants. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is expected to tell the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday about recent enhancements to immigration enforcement and the need for broad reform. "

"...the Progressives’ article claims increased immigration has swamped labor markets with low-skilled, less-educated workers, driving down wages for working-class Americans. This argument usually comes from the Right as part of efforts to restrict immigration and block bills that would give legal status to unauthorized immigrants."

4. I had to edit my post to make 'em go away for me.
I'd assumed that that meant no one else would see 'em.

3. That's me.
I am most definitely a progressive and I am pretty much against anymore immigration into the United States -- legal or illegal.

As our population approaches 325,000,000 we are way past sustainability for humans in this country -- especially considering our mass consumption style of living. So, not only can we not let more people come into the country to live the "American dream," we should start voluntarily limiting family size to get our population down to a level that our resources can support.

When you know that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is one of the biggest proponents for essentially an 'open' border with Mexico, you begin to understand that cheap, exploitable labor is a prime reason for "immigration reform'.

Once upon a time immigration was important to making this country a great nation, but things change. Just as we must start consuming less, using less carbon-based fuels, and wind down the U.S. global empire, our idealistic conception of immigration will have to change in the face of new environmental and economic realities.
