9. When that same federal government comes out and tells seniors

they will not get a COL increase this year because of inflation, even though medical costs are way up, then ya...I have a problem with it.

Since the SS COLA isn't tied to health care, energy and transportation costs, which it should be by the way, then every person that is employed by the federal government should be punished? Since when have these employees been the ones deciding what factors are taken into consideration when determining the cost of living adjustments applied to Social Security?

government seems a little excessive in light of the decision made about seniors, state employees across the country being furloughed, and the economic conditions in general. I can see merit raises based on individual performance, but that is not what this is.

Your other point isn't viable, we'd spend more money than the 2% raise will amount to in attempting to implement a merit based evaluation system where one doesn't currently exist.

That money goes right back into the economy. A 2% pay raise for the postman who delivers my mail? The US Park Ranger who gives National Park tours? The clerk at the Department of the Interior? Hell yes.

There are many federal employees, most of whom don't make a whole lot of money. This is money right back into the economy.

I deal with a lot of those people on a daily basis and for the most part they are underpaid.

I know several federal workers (USDA, Forest Service, ACOE, USGS, Fish and Wildlife) who work their tails off. Why do you want to begrudge them a pay raise?

aren't keeping up with inflation OR the increases in their insurance costs.

Fucking incredible that anyone would expect public servants to keep losing ground. Workers in private sector tend to get paid a LOT more for comparable work, and the fed employees tend to have a whole lot more oversight than most in private sector.

I'm in no way outraged to know that there are a some civilian federal employees out there getting a 2% raise.

If there's a good place to spend our money that's one of them. It stimulates all the local economies in which these people live and just may possibly help some of these people actually pay their bills this next year.

19. I get a federal pension too

and I feel extremely fortunate to get it!

My husband worked for Unisys which had contracts with the federal government. Unisys offered a pitiful pension, nothing like a federal pension.

So please stop complaining. If the non-federal retirees find out the difference in your (and my) pension and their pension, they may elect someone who will start REDUCING our pensions!!!!

I have no idea how that might have happened. Perhaps a friendly mod can fix that. Thanks for pointing that out, I had to log out an back, this computer is not quite state of the art and often hangs up when I post (one reason I don't post often).

Many comments on this thread echo my outrage. I know many people who are being laid off, facing cuts in hours, or cuts in their rate, that coupled with no raise in SS, it seems it would have been better defer it.
