Since Dexter has such a well defined "killing code"

Why haven't they shown him killing Health Insurance executives? They would easily fall under his code of "ethics", right?

9. Did indeed. The main victim was a heartless insurance agent.
The opening sequence were investors who stole the life savings of poor people.

5. Tee hee! I'm in exactly the opposite position!
Every season of Dexter I watch in one shot. I can't stand the wait between episodes. So next week when my finals are over, I've got them all ready. I'm just going to retire to my room, sit back and veg for 12 hours.

15. Guilty pleasure with many people
for sure.

Although from another perspective the gungeon folks who would never shoot to kill someone just for fun but "only in self defense" aren't a whole lot different; that's just their code.

And before the flamethrowers show up - not talking about the sane gun owners here - just the several "special ones" here on DU.

One thing that really disturbs me about the story in general is that Dexter's "code" essentially means he hunts crazy people, and that's justifiable because they're "killers".

I can suspend my own ideas of retribution well enough to enjoy the pace and plot, but in the real world, I don't think that anyone who plans to kill another human for any reason is qualifiable as "sane", and that includes virtually every non-negligent homicide you can conceive of.

16. So am I. BTW... I think Big Love will be back in the beginning of January. :)
I believe Tara and Nurse Jackie are in the spring? True Blood at the beginning of the summer?

And yes, HBO and Showtime series rock!

13. Everyone's favorite serial killer..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dexter_%28TV_series%29

Dexter is an American television drama series that airs on the premium channel Showtime. Set in Miami, the series centers on Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a serial killer who works for the Miami Metro Police Department as a blood spatter analyst.

The show is based on characters created by Jeff Lindsay for his series of Dexter novels. It was adapted for television by Emmy Award-winning screenwriter James Manos, Jr., who wrote the pilot episode.

On October 21, 2008, Showtime renewed the series for a fourth and fifth season, each consisting of twelve episodes. Production began in early 2009, with season four premiering September 27, 2009.<1>

Season 1's plot was adapted from the first novel in Jeff Lindsay's "Dexter" series, Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Subsequent seasons have featured original storylines.

Orphaned at the age of three and harboring a traumatic secret, Dexter was adopted by a Miami police officer named Harry Morgan, who recognized Dexter's sociopathic tendencies and taught him to channel his gruesome passion for thrill killing by giving it a constructive direction: killing people who deserve it. Most have slipped through the justice system, due to loopholes and technicalities in the law or were never apprehended.

To hide in plain sight and to erase his own crimes, Dexter works as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department. Although his drive to kill is unflinching (otherwise overcome by a feeling of "emptiness") Dexter is, through extensive instruction from Harry, able to fake normal emotions and keep up his appearance as a socially-responsible human being. Flashbacks throughout the series show how Harry, who died several years before, instructed Dexter on the art of appearing normal, and he follows Harry's instructions as a sacred "Code of Harry". In accordance with this code, most of Dexter's victims must be killers themselves; people who have killed multiple times with no remorse. Dexter must also have proof that the criminals are definitely guilty before he takes action. In the episode "Return to Sender", Dexter is shown to have used the alias "Patrick Bateman" to procure powerful sedatives to use on victims. This is the same name used by Bret Easton Ellis for the serial killer in his 1991 novel American Psycho (as well as the 2000 film of the same name), who, like Dexter, is a seemingly normal person by day but a ruthless serial killer by night.

23. Thanks! I'm at a point now where I'm thinking about eliminating my TV.
It's a difficult decision only because I work from home and my job consists of long periods of monitoring puncuated by short occasional bursts of activity. So I have lots of spare time. The more good stuff I find online to watch to fill the slow periods, the closer I get to finalizing that decision.

27. Does it creep anybody out that this show is so popular? I mean - is
this idea of a serial killer (who only offs bad guys) really appealing and does it represent some deep, dark desire that he would actually exist?

I've enjoyed watching it a couple of times but like the appeal of 24 to so many people - it kinda creeps me out.

29. He's really just on the other side of Batman - the vigilante myth America always has
Much more grisly about it, but the code keeps him on this side of sympathetic.

30. yes. It creeps me out about myself.

but only a little.

I was about 23 when I first saw real crime scene photos; I had to re-photograph them. No big deal, I thought, even though I didn't relish the idea. About two hours later, I had to pull my car over. I was shaking, crying, and on the verge of vomiting.

I don't like it that gruesome scenes from Dexter don't seem to affect me.

are telling us that Dexter is fake? I don't think I could stomach real crime scenes.
