11. Fjord horses
are short and blocky, and some mares don't "show" as much as others, especially if it is a first pregnancy.

Since they didn't breed the mare on purpose, they probably thought it was a "hay belly" until she started bagging up.

In 1973, my first mare had a "surprise" pregnancy. She'd never been bred...on purpose, but was in a big pasture that included some weanling colts, who were gelded as spring approached. Apparently, one of the older colts was precocious. We denied the visible evidence for awhile, and finally had a vet out to confirm pregnancy a few weeks before the birth.

3. It wouldn't surprise me if he's not the only "surprise" baby at that farm.
I don't doubt that Dad had his way with some of the other mares, too. If the owners didn't recognize that one mare was pregnant, I suspect they might miss any others, too.

9. I've also heard of them being used as service animals for people with disabilities.
They're VERY trainable.
