Latest Coakley Internal: Brown +2
Source: Steve Kornacki

I've been told reliably that Martha Coakley's internal poll for Friday night showed Republican Scott Brown leading by two points, 47 to 45 percent. Her campaign's three-night average for Friday, Thursday and Wednesday is the same -- a 47 to 45 lead for Brown.

This is, obviously, not great news for the Democratic nominee. But it does suggest that Brown's momentum -- which took him from a double-digit gap to the lead in Coakley's poll in about a week's time -- has been arrested. On Wednesday night, Coakley's poll put her ahead by two, 46 to 44. On Thursday night, Brown surged ahead by three, 48 to 45. And on Friday, it was back to a two-point race. In other words, a nail-biter on Tuesday looks likely.

UPDATE: As a friend points out, the Friday night numbers probably don't take into account Coakley's latest well-publicized gaffe, when she seemed to forget that Curt Schilling -- who at one point flirted with running in this race -- had played for the Red Sox. It may be silly that baseball IQ could have anything to do with a Senate candidate's election prospects, but that's where we are.

I put $1,000 into this race last week, but I don't get a warm fuzzy feeling that anyone in the campaign really knows how to pull things together at the finish line.

1. People who vote based upon sport team preferences
deserve to starve. If you are that ignorant/simple, then you get what you deserve.

3. I don't think it's that simple...

it's not that she is or isn't a Sox fan; it's that she screwed up a local/cultural reference and thus comes across as someone who doesn't know the local community.

5. I am not much of sports fan to begin with
so I am already out of the running based upon that.

13. She is a woman, she may not have time to sit around, take in a beer or two and watch a damn game.
I know the names of very few sports figures.

17. But, if you lived in Massachusetts in 2004, you knew Schilling's. & What's with the gender stereo-
types? This is not 1955.

Men aren't busy? Busy women don't watch sports?

21. Sorry, but I think men still have more time , participate and watch sports
more frequently than women. Personally, I live in Pittsburgh, and I couldn't tell you about any sports figure except for Rothlesburger and I only know about him because I see his name on shirts. Frankly- I find better things to do with my time than sit and watch sports games. Maybe Coakley is more like me.

sport team preferences, feel free to. Just don't cry when you get shafted.

14. You just don't get it. I would never voluntarily watch a sports game. I know about Schilling.
Edited on Sun Jan-17-10 01:45 AM by No Elephants
The Red Sox had not won a world series since Babe Ruth played for them--until 2004, when Schilling pitched, even though his stitched foot was bleeding.

Anyone who lives in Massachusetts and does not know that is about as out of touch as it gets. You cannont watch TV, listen to radio or read newspapers in this state without knowing about Schilling, even if you'd rather not know.

I'd have to look askance at someone who did not know that, and I could care less about sports, and could not know less if I tried.

8. Got nothing to do with the base and everything to do with
'swing voters' or independents.

Get over yourself. You represent a small segment of the party, but a larger (and louder) percentage of DU. That's all.

If you could swing elections, Denny the K would be president. OR VP.

These are the risks the Dems seem to be willing to take. So much for my dream of actually having a party that opposes the repugs.

12. Coakley seems to be put under more scrutiny than Brown. Why is that?
It doesn't make any difference what he says at all, but everyone is all over Coakley? And, over Shilling- a repub? Oh my, nothing matters but my sports team?

I would suggest people stop being pessimistic- it is contagious, we need to show enthusiam. People have got to get out and work for her with enthusiasm. Money is great, but taking your message to the people is better at this point.

Edited on Sun Jan-17-10 01:56 AM by No Elephants
If that's your view, maybe you should take it up with Skinner, or start your own board.

P.S. I am voting for Coakley, but she should never have won the primary. She was a lousy candidate in the primary debates and campaign and a lousy candidate in the election debates and campaign. And, if she had not been a woman, she probably would not have won, as she herself implied.

Democrats, especially Massachusetts Democrats, need to get beyond identity politics.

23. No, I see no value in your post -not when we have a close race.
We don't need to hear she will lose two days before an election. What kind of message does this serve when we need to get out the vote?

Maybe this will help get out the people who are too apathetic to vote and beat the teabaggers.
