Fred Thompson?
I think this is who we will have to beat in '08.

1. Tell me about his campaign manager and fundraisers, his ground teams in Iowa and New Hampshire, his
list of prominent Repub endorsements, his total funds raised, his burn rate, and his cash on hand.

The last time the Repubs tried to get an actor elected president, we got Reagan in 1980, BUT ONLY AFTER Reagan first got his ass handed to him by Ford in 1976. 2008 is Fred's 1976 (and he's too old given his poor health to run again in 2012).

Besides, Fred's a good buddy of McCain's and Fred getting into the race would be the last straw for McCain's campaign. Fred's not running; look for him to endorse McCain before the Iowa caucus.

3. He also just signed a new contract to do political commentary
(in addition to Paul Harvey subbing) for ABC Radio--sounds like he's planning on keeping his day job for a while.

2. As I have said and said, Fred is unelectable
He has a teen-aged wife, a temper that makes McCain look like a creme puff, and major skeletons in his closet.

5. His wife is not "teen-aged," she's 40.
And the kind of people who would elect him will only admire him for having her.

As for the rest, that's another matter.

But thanks for not saying he's "sick" and likely to keel over dead any day, because that would be another exaggeration.

6. Thank you, Berry, for "getting it."
I swear, some people on this board really do live in bubbles (not you). They need to break out and come down to the Heartland and hear the "excitement" that Fred Thompson is generating.

I hear it EVERY MORNING on local talk radio - and not from the hosts - from people calling it.

It's rather scary and if we don't believe it to get a handle on it, we're cooked.

The OP, also from TN (I can tell from the flag), knows this as well.

10. The country isn't Tennessee
I do "get it" ... I don't live in a bubble ... but I can tell you that there's no excitement whatsoever outside where you are. This is being used to attempt to break the back of Democratic resolve -- nothing more. They have nothing else but some specter of a "might be popular" candidate since all their other so-called candidates are in the mud. If this was a viable candidate, I might have some concern, but he's not and I don't.

9. I was using exaggeration to make a point
I thought that was fairly obvious. She still is much younger than he is. And rumor hath it their marriage is not
what it seems.

I know Thompson has a lot of fans here, but I'm afraid he's lower on the list of my concerns when it comes to the GOPher
hole.

7. I Smell Third Party
Most Repugnicans I run into aren't happy with the Rudy McRomney choice...many either like some fringe candidate like a Hunter or Paul and have little loyalty or interest in the front runners. The booooshies have all but destroyed the party and the natives are restless and won't be taking what the RNC throws at them.

I've long predicted that we'll see a right wing third party...ala Perot...emerge later this year...and I suspect Gnewt will be the one answering the call. If not him, then a Tancredo...the blood in the GOOP primaries will be thick and the knives will shred whatever "party unity" to pieces. Thompson is a reaction to the concerns by the party powers that all their front runners are very weak and an alternative...a safe and controllable alternative...must be found...that being Thompson.

We're already seeing a lot of activity on the local front by the Liberatarians...who picked up a lot of disgruntled right wing Repugnicans and could be a real stinker in the GOOP primaries and in the general election next year. The GOOP faces an outright revolt on their right...and it couldn't happen to a bunch of bigger hypocrites.

8. Thompson is way behind the curve when it comes to launching a Presidential Campaign...
Logistically it is a daunting task to put together a staff, line up donors, develop a plan to gain needed publicity. However, issues and policy positions must be addressed in short order.

Plus other candidates will put him on the spot to give specifics behind any plans he announces.

It ain't television where you can read off a script.

He looks like he's been on chemo or radiation. He doesn't look AT ALL healthy.

12. 65 and he has a 3 y.o. and 6 month old baby!?
That's selfish of Fred. These kids will be lucky if their dad is there for them through adolescence.

13. Why on earth would a man in his position want to take on the ...
monumental task of cleaning up Bush's fiasco? He's got a good life why screw it up?

15. So if he were 45 or 35 had them and died before adolescence would you call him selfish as well
people who want to have kids should have to gurantee they are going to live a certian time aftward? No 30 or 40 year old father or mother can promise any length of time. My father was 30 when I was born and made it 17 years, long enough to not call him selfish?
