Orwell rolls in his grave - a MUST see documentary.
I saw this documentary yesterday and was in a state of deep depression. Many or most of you have probably seen it, but to me it was new. It is about how mass media in the US is controlled by a handful of large corporations. These corporations have one goal: to get larger and control the system that reports the news. To this end, big media has aligned itself with the conservative Republican political minority and has pushed their selfish agenda in order to gain political favor and build fortunes.

This is part of an online a review:

Punctuated with quotes and phrases from George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, this film takes issues that many people may already suspect to be true and presents it with sound and video. The movie is a good presentation of how American society has turned into an oligarchy of frightening proportions. In some sense, Orwell Rolls In His Grave is a pretty depressing film. To think that the wealthiest one-tenths of one percent of the country is in control of the largest corporations, the executive and judicial branches of government and the mass media is something that challenges our notions of freedom and democracy.

Why are some news stories dropped? Why are some news stories not reported on at all? The documentary presents evidence that the 1980 and 2000 U.S. presidential elections were won by Republicans through dirty tricks and media spin and control. The movie investigates the 1980 "October Surprise" when hostages held for more than 400 days in Iran were detained longer until after the presidential election. Director Pappas presents evidence that representatives from the Ronald Reagan campaign met with representatives from Iran to ensure that the hostages would not be released until after the election. The hostages were released the day of Reagan's inauguration. After a congressional commission turned back any accusation of wrongdoing, the story and scandal was never reported further.

The movie also shows the scandalous situation during the 2000 election which led to many votes not being counted or tallied incorrectly in Florida. With the rest of the country divided, Florida became the pivotal state in which the presidential election would be decided. The election between George W. Bush and Al Gore was so close in Florida, that the Florida State Supreme Court ordered a manual recount of all ballots to determine the winner. The U.S. Supreme Court, however, stopped the recount when it looked like Gore may win. The movie suggests that Bush "stole" the election and the media essentially overlooks this political maneuvering.

Orwell Rolls In His Grave is an acerbic political movie. It ties in big media with politics and specifically targets the Republican party and the Neo-Conservative (neocon) movement. The creators of the film present a lot of evidence linking politics and big media corporations, however it glosses over some other issues which may have made a more balanced report. For example, the 1980 "October Surprise" got a lot of press 6 years later when the public learned that the Reagan administration actually did make an arms deal with the Iranian government for the release of the hostages -- it then look the money it made during this illegal sale and sent it to rebels in Nicaragua. This scandal became known as the Iran-Contra Affair and the resulting reports and congressional hearings were news for nearly two years.

Orwell Rolls in His Grave "Could a media system, controlled by a few global corporations with the ability to overwhelm all competing voices, be able to turn lies into truth?..." This chilling documentary film examines the relationship between the media, corporate America, and government. In a country where the "top 1% control 90% of the wealth", the film argues that the media system is nothing but a "subsidiary of corporate America." Director: Robert Kane Pappas - Run Time 1 Hour 46 Minutes

13. More!
Charles Lewis:

Charles Lewis is a professor and the founding executive editor of the new Investigative Reporting Workshop at the American University School of Communication, in Washington, D.C. The Workshop has been established to do significant, original, national and international investigative reporting for multimedia publication or broadcast, and also serve as a laboratory “incubator” to develop new models for conducting and delivering investigative journalism.

A national investigative journalist for nearly 30 years, Lewis is a bestselling author who has founded or co-founded three nonprofit organizations in Washington, including the Center for Public Integrity. Lewis left a successful career as a producer for the CBS News program 60 Minutes and began the Center, which under his leadership published roughly 300 investigative reports, including 14 books, from 1989 through 2004, honored more than 30 times by national journalism organizations.

In 2008, he created, directed and co-authored The Iraq War Card, a 380,000-word chronology and analysis of the pre-war public rhetoric by leading members of the Bush administration, which identified 935 "false statements" about the national security threat posed by Saddam Hussein's Iraq. In 2003, in February the Center posted secret draft "Patriot II" legislation and in October posted all of the known U.S. contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Windfalls of War first identified that Halliburton had received the most money from those contracts, and won the George Polk Award. A co-author of five books, including national bestseller The Buying of the President 2004, Lewis was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 1998 and received the PEN USA First Amendment award in 2004.

Since 2005 Lewis has served as president of the Fund for Independence in Journalism in Washington, an endowment and legal defense support organization for the Center for Public Integrity. He was a Ferris Professor at Princeton University in 2005, a Shorenstein Fellow at Harvard University in the spring of 2006.

Mark Crispin Miller:

Mark Crispin Miller is professor of media studies at New York University and the author of the book: Fooled Again, How the Right Stole the 2004 Elections. He is known for his writing on American media and for his activism on behalf of democratic media reform. His books include Boxed In: The Culture of TV, Seeing Through Movies, and Mad Scientists, a study of war propaganda.

Political commentary: (wikipedia)
Miller writes in his book, Fooled Again, that the 2000 U.S. Presidential election and 2004 U.S. Presidential election were stolen. Miller presents extensive documentation, backed by 56 pages of notes, supporting his contention that the outcome of both elections was altered and controlled by a small minority. He states that the American voting populace can no longer assume that their votes will be accurately assessed, and that the installation of electronic voting machines in state after state is a fundamental flaw in the U.S. electoral system. He appeared in the 2004 documentary Orwell Rolls in His Grave, which focuses on the hidden mechanics of the media, its role as it should be and what it actually is, and how it shapes (to the point of almost controlling) U.S. politics.

He is a signatory to the 9/11 Truth Statement.

His latest book, Loser Take All: Election Fraud and the Subversion of Democracy 2000-2008, covers U.S. election fraud and its acceptance in those years.

21. Wide array of reviews...
Edited on Wed Mar-17-10 04:02 PM by Echo In Light

More than anything, it is the perversion of language that threatens what remains of our crumbling democracy. One example from the film, and perhaps the most irritating lie perpetrated by the Bush Administration, is the so-called “death tax.” Because few now call it anything else, the move was brilliant indeed, as the tax has been transformed from a truth — that around 50% of inheritance taxes collected come from one-tenth of one percent of families, and that 95% of the tax affects a mere 2% of American wealth — into sneaky populist rhetoric, where images of auctioned family farms and surrendered bank accounts send the average Joe into a sweaty panic. But Orwell himself would be stunned by the realization of his dystopian novel. The record has been changed, reality compromised, and the agents of the public trust serve their corporate masters while portraying themselves as “journalists” and “investigative muckrakers.” Where were the Woodwards and Bernsteins of our own time to point out that everything Bush said on the subject of the death tax was utter and complete bullshit? Outside of a few individuals who were quickly labeled radical madmen, the media remained defiantly silent.

Unfortunately, "The Choir" around here who is receptive has either seen it or will see it, but the majority will probably roll their eyes and smugly say "It Doesn't Exist" or find College Hoops or some other distraction to blanket themselves in.

The sad state of affairs for America is that the Truth will do little good for those who simply can't and won't embrace it, and choose the path of least resistance.

Sorry for the cynicism, just feeling it today.

This country is just about done.

36. When the MSM refused to report that the Bush camp was dominated by the PNAC neo-cons, it was over!
I was made aware of the PNAC documents that clearly outlined exactly their policies that were to be put into affect when 9/11 provided them with their "Pearl Harbor" I concluded that the days for the Republic were numbered. When I listened with absolute shock when the working class began to support policies that would bring about their own economic destruction I knew that 1984 had arrived. It became bizarre when I heard upper Middle Class workers actually defending out-sourcing. This was the new Global Economy and those stupid union factory workers were an impediment to progress.

Now their jobs are in jeopardy and they expect me to come to their aid. I suppose that they will just have to suck it up and deal with it like they told those lowly factory workers that they were impeding progress.
