Fear of Embarrassment is not a reason to pass a Mandate on the American People
Saving anyone's face is not a good reason to put the American people in shackles.

1. Thank you for saying that.
I just about lost a jaw when I read that as a good reason to support the Manadtory Health Insurance bill. :wow:

3. Calling it a "progressive victory" is worse.
It's 15 year old GOP ideas and the historical revisionism is already started trying to sell this as some sort of "progressive" accomplishment.

Who said this had anything to do with avoiding embarrassment?

6. It's the elephant in the room that no one mentions
Pardon the metaphor, but it was the best one I had.

After that "Waterloo" comment by Sen. Jim DeMint, there's been an undercurrent that I've noticed that seems to want to avoid having the GOP gloat should something signable not make it to the President's desk. I feel that sentiment has been a driving force for the continual dumbing-down of this bill and its "fix".

8. If they got rid of everything in the bill,
they would still pass empty pages to save face.

Single payer, Medicare for everyone, was never an option. Real health care was never as important as winning in 2012 and getting big bucks from Wall Street.

12. Here you go
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/17/dennis-kucinich-health-care_n_502182.html

>A health care failure could destroy any transformative potential left in Obama's administration, he worried.

"We have to be very careful that the potential of President Obama's presidency not be destroyed by this debate. And I feel, even though I have many differences with him on policy, there's something much bigger at stake here for America," he said.<

It's all about embarrassment. Unfortunately for President Obama, the "embarrassment" will be minor when he's confronted by millions who are going to have to fork out money they can ill afford for oh, 60% coverage...

18. It was actually about a DUer who started a thread --
claiming we needed to support the bill to save O. Can't find it now, it seems to have dropped off the main page here.

28. After all, it's better to look good than to feel good
It seems we all need a good laugh, so we won't dwell on the fact that to the Obama administration, it's better to look good than to actually keep your promises...

And, yeah, it's still hilarious to watch Billy Crystal channel Fernando Lamas...

Pulling out of both would be an "embarrassment", would it not?

We can't have any more embarrassments! Pass the health care legislation, NOW!

15. nobody is being put in shackles.
the rightwing framing of opposition to health care reform here on DU is a bit off-putting.

Do you view your mandated social security payments as 'shackles'? How about your mandated car insurance? Another gummint shackle?

The LEFT wing framing is that government colludes with business to screw you.

Get it right. :)

22. Right wing framing? Are you shitting me?
That's rich coming from a mandate supporter. The main justification for the mandate is the belief that selfish free-riding irresponsible Welfare Queen uninsured people are the main cause of high health care costs.

24. Actually, no, this is only the third time in history there has been a "shackle" like this.
Edited on Wed Mar-17-10 05:16 PM by Xithras
You are not required to pay into social security. You are not required to have a job. You are not required to own a car. You are not required to have car insurance. You are not required to pay taxes. You are not required to have a residence. You are not required to have a license or ID. You are not REQUIRED to do any of those things. You CHOOSE to engage in activities that have "strings" attached. You CHOOSE to take money from our economic system, and therefore CHOOSE to carry the tax and social burdens that go along with it.

In American history, there have only been two prior mandates that were illegal to opt out from.

1. You have to fill out your census form every 10 years. (Enacted by the nations founders)

2. If you're male, you must register for the selective service when you reach 18. (Enacted by Abe Lincoln)

And now there will be...

3. You must have health insurance. (Enacted by Obama)
