Fla. Senate passes 'teacher tenure' bill-making it easier to fire teachers
Fla. Senate passes 'teacher tenure' bill

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., March 25 (UPI) -- Florida Gov. Charlie Crist said he approved of the Senate's passing an education bill making it easier to fire teachers and tying pay increases to test scores.

The controversial "teacher tenure" bill Wednesday passed narrowly in the Senate, 21-17, in Tallahassee, the St. Petersburg Times reported.

Crist's approval and the Senate's early focus on education mean the bill, which still must move through the state's House, will probably become law, Speaker-designate Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, said.

"This is a bill that really focuses on trying to help children and encouraging better teachers. It pays better teachers more, and that just seems like the right thing to do to me," said Crist.

No Democrats voted for the tenure measure, the Times said.

1. Teachers were already leaving
I'd imagine that we'll see some long term withdrawl of teachers from out school system as they seek out private schools and other states where their job security will be better.

2. We're already planning to leave
My SO has been a teacher in FL for 18 years. We've got a son in 7th grade and a house we can't yet sell. We're evaluating our options now that the idiots in the FL legislature has declared war on teachers and on public education.

This is Jeb Bush's dream come true, carried out by his henchman, Senate president John Thrasher. Way to further decimate the middle class in this state, boys :puke:

3. I'm ok with this.
Teachers should not be allowed a free pass just because they have tenure. Every job should be performance based.

4. Florida is really out to destroy their children. It is called balancing the
budget on the backs of their children.
