Tokyo's population rises past 13 million mark as people come looking for work
Kyodo News

The population of metropolitan Tokyo is estimated to have topped the 13 million mark for the first time in April, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said Wednesday.

The population has increased by 1 million this decade after surpassing 12 million in 2000.

Calculated on the basis of the 2005 national census and monthly tallies of resident registry, the population was 13.01 million as of April 1, about 25,000 more than the month before due to job-related and other relocations to the capital for the start of the new business and school years.

The latest increase is attributable to a boom in building of large-scale condominiums in areas like Koto Ward and people moving to the capital in search of work, a metropolitan official said.

Japan's jobless rate unexpectedly falls to 4.9% in January

Tuesday 02nd March, 01:11 PM JST

TOKYO —
Japan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 4.9% in January from a revised 5.2% in the previous month, amid some signs of an economic recovery, government data showed Tuesday. This is the first time that the rate has slipped below the 5% level since March last year.

But the number of jobless people rose 460,000 from a year earlier to 3.23 million for the 15th straight monthly expansion, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said in a preliminary report.

The jobless rate for men fell 0.1 percentage point from the previous month to 5.2%, and that for women dropped 0.5 point to 4.6%.
