Brady Bendtsen, 17, Says He Carries Cell Phone For Medical Emergencies

A Hampton High School student said he suffered a seizure while being taken away in handcuffs following a mix-up at the school regarding his medical condition.

While telling his story to WTAE Channel 4 Action News reporter Sheldon Ingram, 17-year-old Brady Bendtsen dropped to his knees sensing something was wrong.

Bendtsen has suffered recurring seizures since viral encephalitis, commonly known as "inflammation of the brain," hospitalized him in intensive care in the fall.

His mother said arrangements were made with the school district for her son to carry his cell phone in case of an emergency.

Bendtsen said he resisted when the assistant principal tried to confiscate his phone during a fire drill last week.

4. They can't keep track of students requiring special circumstances?
I see they have 2 assistant principals in their high school of about 1200 students (9-12). Gee, my high school only had 1 assistant principal and we had just under 1,500 students grades 10-12.

6. I had a teacher attempt to discpline my daughter for a rules violation when it she was explicitly
allowed to have the offending item in her agreement. She carried a copy with her and he refused to even look at it, threatening her with detention when she pointed out she was allowed to have it. I went to see the principal that afternoon and reminded him of the perfect record the district had of losing ADA complaints and suggested in the strongest terms he get his bubba back in line. I also reminded him that any hint of vengance would not be received well by me either. It clearly worked. The next day the same teacher stopped my daughter in the hallway and asked her who I thought I was going to his boss over the incident. She pointed out that I would be glad to meet with him if he wanted to, but that until he understoond the law it was probably a waste of my time. When he started growling about her disrespectful attitude, she reminded him that those were my words not hers, and that he had also been cautioned about vengeance. He shut up, left her alone, and never tried to contact me.

Unfortunately that is the kind of attitude needed these days. Admins and teachers are just as likely as anyone else to ignore the rules and to hate being called to account. Nothing new there.

5. We have a slam dunk ADA lawsuit on the way
Its too bad penalties for misbehavior are not allowed under ADA, nor assessment directly upon responsible personnel.
