Get Rid of Morning Joe -- by Donald Sutherland
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/donald-sutherland/morning-joe_b_560129.html

Are the programmers at MSNBC nuts? They give us refreshing afternoons with Chris and Ed, put us to bed with the clarifying sensibilities of Rachel and Keith and then, idiotically, wake us up with Mr. Small Mouth.

Who is this idiot? Why is he there? He can't even listen. He doesn't conduct a decent conversation. He runs over everyone else's words with a landslide of diarrhea. I saw him on Friday, stomping around the stage like a posturing rooster, calling Paul Krugman a political hack. Paul Krugman's a political hack? Surely they put make-up on Mr. Small Mouth. Doesn't he look in the mirror? That's where he'd see what a political hack looks like.

For god's sake, MSNBC, get rid of him, he's beneath you. This guy makes Pat Buchanan look embarrassed. Go out and get the television equivalent of David Brooks to chair your program. He'd be worth listening to. He'd give conservative opinion a rational voice. That person would be calmly articulate, and that'd make for worthwhile conversation. Reminiscent of William Safire or, better still, William F. Buckley. That'd be fair and balanced broadcasting!

And he doesn't need to be named Joe. They put calling a cup of coffee a cup of "Joe" out to pasture decades ago. Joe's a plumber now.

harmful to their masters than helpful, who demonstrate daily who really OWNS our 'public' airwaves via the old golden rule maxim...

We Who Has the Gold, RULES

I guess this recent comment by Phil Griffin, MSNBC President explains it...

We Want To Be Like Fox News

MSNBC President Phil Griffin said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune's Phil Rosenthal that he hopes MSNBC can grow to be more like Fox News, but that he won't be putting any "hard-right shows" on his network.

Griffin praised Fox News chief Roger Ailes for the television phenomenon he's created.

"He's changed media," Griffin said of Ailes. "Everybody does news differently because Roger's changed the world. Roger early on figured it out and was brilliant."

To Griffin, developing a successful cable news network means creating a place for "like-minded" viewers to come for the network's hosts' takes on the news.

"We're talking about the actions and passions of today, which tend to be political," he said.

when i saw the web ads for their line up, it seemed pretty obvious how they feel about Keith and Rachel as all the other hosts had imagery of high office with their attendant American iconography (white house, congress building, president, etc), whereas Keith and Rachel had images associated with them or their shows that depicted fringe wackos on the right, as if they delt in BS like the kooks Rush, Malkin, etc. and they even had a hammer and sickle flag in one of Rachels images.

147. That story about Lori Klausutis is just incredible.
And to think that Scarborough is a regular on TV - as a news information source! Even if he had nothing to do with her death, the way it was handled is reprehensible and outright disgusting.

And America makes him into a celebrity.

Think "morning zoo" type radio broadcasts. Same reason they had Imus before... shtick sells with the breakfast crowd. Be thankful the network allows its programming to mature later in the day!

That said, I would kill to see Sutherland as a guest on the Squint and Meat Puppet show. Donald. Not that horrible "24" guy.

18. Mr. Sutherland's son is fine
Keifer is simply playing a part in a fictional drama. Actors often portray characters that bear no resemblance to their real-life political views. Look at conservative Kelsey Grammer and his liberal character Frasier Crane.

What you may not know is that Keifer's grandfather was Canadian politician Tommy Douglas - the man responsible for giving his country Universal Health Care:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Douglas

The younger Mr. Sutherland has even made PSAs, touting the need for health care reform:

And apparently that is exactly where he stands now.

MSNBC tried a number of hosts to replace Imus including Stephanie Miller. It appears that Joe S. and company performed the best and that's why he got the slot.

124. I agree.
I frequently watch the show. While I find Mika annoying, and dislike Joe, I absolutely loathe Mike Barnicle. I can tolerate / even find it in myself to like Willie Geist.

What I like about the show is the format. I absolutely love the format, and they more often than not get good guests.

I think the show lacks balance. If they had a strong liberal voice on the show, like instead of having someone like Mike Barnicle show up all the time as the fourth wheel... say... replace him with Lawrence O'Donnell. If they had someone like Lawrence on there every morning to balance things out the show suddenly becomes much better. It's pretty clear that Mika was supposed to be the voice from the left, but it appears as if he's indoctrinated her and when she does actually have a differing opinion Joe can easily bully her into silence. Lawrence wouldn't tolerate that shit.

42. Why would they do that when Shuster couldn't carry his own show when he had one?
Edited on Wed May-05-10 11:21 AM by Mike Daniels
They gave Shuster a shot during the late afternoon/early news slot. As much as I liked his show he apparently wasn't pulling the ratings they wanted and gave his slot to Ed Shultz.

68. They didn't give his slot to Ed
Ed is on from 6-7pm EST, and Schuster was on in the afternoon from 3-4pm EST. Schuster is gone not because of ratings, but because of his test screening with CNN.

80. Shuster hosted a political event show after the election
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1600_Pennsylvania_Avenue_(TV)

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue - initially hosted by David Gregory and then taken over by Shuster in December 2008. The show ran at 6 p.m. and was replaced by The Ed Show in April 2009.

Shuster was reassigned to an afternoon shift which means that his ratings weren't cutting it at the higher profile 6 p.m. slot.

Even if he was still at MSNBC, given his failure to hold the 6 p.m. slot I doubt MSNBC would have given him a morning show.

24. Funny you started this thread today.
I had just decided not to watch "Morning Joe" anymore. Joe leans way too far to the right for me. To the point that it seems like he will say anything just to get a reaction that can lead to an argument. I like to start my day with a little calm. Not listening to four people yelling over each other.

I was channel surfing this morning trying to find something else to watch, but with little success. There is either too much fluff or Joe. I might just start my day off with the "History Channel" or something.

Maybe the cartoon network.

28. I'd like Mika to get away from Joe
and onto a show with a completely different format.

Given Morning Show's makeup, it's entirely possible she's acting out a scenario of being deferential to men while not appearing so. Maybe on a show like THE VIEW, or even one with a straight news & features format, she could blossom. WE do need more women on MSNBC. (And to counteract some of those dreadful prison tour shows!)

I do watch it when I'm awake (it starts at 3:30 or 4:00 AM out here), but mostly for the guests.
None of the male cast are worth listening to, except for Pat Buchanan -- not that I agree with him, but he's at least good-natured and sometimes funny.

44. I've seen Mika fill in for the afternoon "news" shows and it's totally different
When she's hosting a "news" show she comes off pretty well ( intelligent and informed ).

As previously mentioned, Morning Joe is a "morning zoo" type show broadcasting on TV vs. radio. As such, Mika plays the female sidekick role assigned to her.

I agree with you on Pat. As much as I'm at odds with his opinions he comes off as much more good-natured as opposed to the perpetually cranky Joe.

They would promote themselves as a team. They would promote each others books. They would travel together to different appearances. They would be entertainers. They would both wear sunglasses.

Mika made a deal with the devil. She gave up any independence and any free thought just to be a partner with Joe Scarborough.

Joe Scarborough seems to believe that if he can scream louder than everyone else, then he wins the argument. So far, it's working for him.

He and Pat Buchanan set the talking points for the day for the right-wing propagandists. They are difficult to counter once they have set in concrete for the entire day.

This is a rather entertaining article, but MSNBC would go out of business without a conservative show in the morning to balance the liberals in the afternoon and evening.

If you live in the West Coast, you'd wake up at 6AM not to Joe's show but rather "The Daily Rundown" (hosted by Chuck Todd and Savannah Guthrie) and then a few hours of generic news programming. As a live network MSNBC creates this dichotomy.

What do you think about Andrea Mitchell's MSNBC show?

123. It is because of Scab and that obsequeous Mika that I no longer watch MSNBC in the AM
I just quit watching. I feel better as a result.

127. They couldn't have someone as intelligent and viewable as Stephanie Miller....
give an audience their "conventional wisdom" as they leave the house every morning. The morning talking points are like the old "Blast fax" of the 90's-establish the norm (anything different would seem troubling) and their talking points for the watercooler group. It used to be that you didn't talk about politics or religion at work but the right changed that because they knew that they could dominate the media (they all went to the same schools and are in the same country clubs).

Check out the babe on CNN Headline News in the morning-the news is still tilted but it is much better TV if you know what I mean. Sorry Mika I no you took the great leap recently but you just aren't THAT worth it.

spent 70 hours a week in front of a tv, and doesn't have normal expressions. Just dead.

132. Morning Joke
Is spin for republicans, watching or listening to that is toxic to sensible American liberal values. By all means cancel that turd of a show and program for your Progressive audience MSNBC. I've been calling for this joker to be canceled for well over a year. It is past time to fire him. Great thread to improve our daily lives.

133. great stuff except
I don't think any conservatives have anything worthwhile to say for themselves, even Buckley and Safire. I do fondly wish the progressives had worthier opponents in America, but they just don't. Conservatives deny facts, and thus are completely, utterly invalid. The real debate should be between the greens and the centrist labor democrats. The only question is whether humans or the environment is more critically important. Free enterprise is an abomination against nature and humanity and it can go hang. Anyone who claims to represent it should be hanged. That means conservatives, and neocons, and neoliberals. Economics is supposed to serve humanity and the planet, not the other way around. Freedom for nature and humans only. Corporations are at best meant to be beasts of burden only.

139. can someone answer this question for me?
A poster at HP says:

"I agree with you a million times over, Mr. Sutherland (though I think you were charitable, in letting Joe's cohorts off the hook--so here I go, less charitably: Mika is the dimwitted progeny of Robin Quivers & Diane Sawyer; and Willie Geist is a perfect cretin)."

Since I have never watched this show, I would like to know who Willie Geist is. Is he talking about the CBS News reporter William Geist?

disturbing. I always thought the elder Geist was a really good reporter, but the idea that he could raise such a blatantly airheaded son with obvious a bias toward stupid RW thinking is disappointing.

166. Willie is the least annoying
part of Morning Jerk. He's just a RW bootlicker. Barnicle and Mika are complete wastes of space and Joe is the Big man on campus...Don't know how many times he's reminded Mika of his High School Football player days and his half term in congress but the dude is a Big Zero. Bring in Stephanie Miller.

150. They have seemed rather subdued for the past two mornings.
A little less wiggly, jiggly, giggly, snide stupidity from Mika and Joe seems to have dialed back his big man around campus crap. I've been wondering if someone has said something to them.

Joe was going on and on about comparing the gulf oil spill to to Katrina was idiotic and blaming Obama for tides, etc. dumb.

the left wing equivalent to screaming, lying right wing hate merchants. Methinks KO flexed his rank within the network.

He is such an extraordinary actor, is he not? He can play the most empathetic, dear, good natured loving parent of a troubled son
in Ordinary People, to a very creepy and believable villain as he did in Backdraft. Of course, MASH will always be one of my favorites too.

Seems to me an undercurrent of contempt which runs through his verbal and body language when talking to Mika Mouse.

I also, can't stand how he drops comments such as, 'a friend of mine at 'the agency' whispered in my ear...' Always with that bullshit as if he's an insider. He's such a jackass with a big mouth I wouldn't tell him what day of the week it is.
