Tonight's Weather Channel special on volcanoes made Bobby Jindal look like a damn fool.

Since I am on my way to Oregon (hunkered down in Amarillo tonight) to sit all summer on a flank cinder cone volcano of the big, active one (Newberry), I paid close attention to this excellent special. It was bad news for Louisiana Gubernor Bobby Jindal (GOP - volcano denier). It seems that USGS volcano monitoring and forecasting saved about 200,000 people and the US personnel at Clark AFB during the cataclysmic eruptions of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991.

Seems too that it is the real estate developers, builders, Chamber of Commerce, and the likes that pull the GOP's strings to oppose volcano monitoring. Not at all unlike the off-shore drilling rooters, eh?
