This isn't the only serious man-caused threat to the Gulf
As if the leak weren't already far more than enough to wreak havoc on marine life, there is also the problem of hypoxia, or oxygen depletion caused by agricultural runoff from the Mississippi river. The combination of these two conditions may be enough to create a permanent dead zone.

1. We treat our planet like a toilet.
Eventually, even the rich will not be able to avoid the noxious wasteland we're creating. Earth has incredible recuperative processes, but she's working against 7 billion toxic life forms.
