Gettysburg Named 'Endangered' Historic Battlefield
Group Says Proposed Casino Poses Threat

ADAMS COUNTY, Pa. -- Gettysburg has been named one of the nation's most endangered historic battlefields.

The Civil War Preservation Trust said the site is threatened by a facility that has not been built yet -- the proposed Mason Dixon Casino.

Proponents of the casino said the facility would not be built on the battlefield

A representative said the National Park Service believes the casino will have no effect on the battlefield. He also said the proposed site is already developed.

News 8 called the Civil War Preservation Trust and asked them to explain their opposition to a casino where there is already a business.

"There is a hotel there at this point. However, I don't think that, you know, projects that may have been built several decades ago that we should use those as justification for mistakes that we don't want to continue making today," said Mary Koik, a representative of the Trust.

1. While this is an important story, it's not a new story
Gettysburg, Antietam/Sharpsburg, and Bull Run/Manassas have been considered endangered for years by encroaching development.

2. The CWPT does good work
They have stopped Wal-Mart from developing near major battlefield sites in VA, for starters.

It would be a travesty to allow a casino anywhere near this hallowed ground.

3. Well, hell, the RW wants to make the outcome of the Civil War an endangered historic outcome.

4. They lost at Gettysburg and they lost at the polls in 2008
But they still can't handle it.
