On Iraq, Gates may not be following Bush's playbook
Gates' recent comments seem to run counter to the message from the White House. During a recent trip to the Middle East, Gates told the Iraqi government that time was running out and praised Democratic efforts in the U.S. Congress to set a timetable for withdrawal, saying it would help prod the Iraqis. He reiterated that point during a meeting with reporters last week.

Car bomb kills 16 people in Iraq
BAGHDAD - A car bomb tore through a busy market in the Shiite holy city of Kufa on Tuesday, killing at least 16 people and wounding 70 in an attack sure to further enflame tensions between Iraq's Sunni and Shiite populations.

Saddam forces get recall in secret
Authorities with the US-led occupation have begun a covert campaign to recruit and train agents with the once-dreaded Iraqi intelligence service to help identify resistance to American forces here after months of increasingly sophisticated attacks and bombings, according to US and Iraqi officials. The extraordinary move to recruit agents of former President Saddam Hussein's brutal security services underscores a growing recognition among US officials that American military forces - already stretched thin - cannot alone prevent attacks like the devastating truck bombing of the UN headquarters this week.

Boehner: GOP support on Iraq could waver
The House Republican leader said Sunday that GOP support could waver if President Bush's Iraq war policy does not succeed by the fall. House Minority Leader John Boehner (news, bio, voting record), R-Ohio, said Bush's troop increase deserves a chance and should be funded even if benchmarks for success are not met. Last week, Bush vetoed a $124 billion bill to pay for Iraq and Afghanistan operations in part because it required troops to begin returning home by Oct. 1.

Senate vote on drug imports
The 49-40 roll call by which the Senate voted to require U.S. officials to certify the safety and effectiveness of prescription medicines imported from foreign countries. The vote effectively killed a drive to allow the importation of cheaper prescription drugs from abroad.

Democrats nearing deal on spending goals
WASHINGTON - Democratic budget writers are closing in on a compromise $2.9 trillion blueprint with big spending increases for military and domestic programs and a balanced federal ledger promised in five years.

Generic Congressional Ballot: Democrat 47% Republican 36%
If the Congressional Election were held today, 47% of American voters say they would currently vote for the Democrat in their district while 36% would pull the voting lever for a Republican. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found 4% favoring a third-party option while 13% are not sure. A month ago, the Democrats enjoyed a 45% to 35% advantage.

Iraq war hampers tornado recovery
OVERLAND PARK, Kansas (Reuters) - A shortage of trucks, helicopters and other equipment -- all sent to the war in Iraq -- has hampered recovery in a U.S. town obliterated by a tornado, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius said on Monday.

NY Post owes us a good follow-up story on Microsoft-Yahoo
Brier Dudley wants the New York Post to investigate -- and report -- whether its anonymous investment banker sources made any money off the huge run in Yahoo caused by its Friday story about Microsoft possibly acquiring Yahoo. He envisions converting the Wall Street Journal's Saturday Pursuits section into a glossy weekend magazine to compete with the New York Times Sunday Magazine. Also, he wouldn't mind tighter writing. "I'm sometimes frustrated by the long stories," he says. Murdoch tells Richard Siklos and Andrew Ross Sorkin that he won't meddle in the journalism or gut the newsroom. "We're not coming in with a bunch of cost-cutters," but "I'm not saying it's going to be a holiday camp for everybody."
