Poll: Louisiana Loves Bobby Jindal -- And Offshore Drilling
<snip>

"The new survey of Louisiana by Public Policy Polling (D) finds that despite the disaster created by the BP oil spill, the state's voters still overwhelmingly support offshore drilling.

The poll asked: "Do you support or oppose drilling for oil off the shore of Louisiana?" The answer was support 77%, oppose 12%. In addition, only 31% said that the spill made them less supportive of drilling, to 28% who said it made them more supportive, and 42% for whom it made no difference.

"People are always concerned with their economic livelihood," writes PPP president Dean Debnam. "In Louisiana the economy and jobs are clearly tied to the oil and gas industry. Louisianans seem more concerned about the closure of oil rigs than of beaches."

The poll also found that one Louisiana politician seems to be doing well: Gov. Bobby Jindal, who has an approval rating of 63%-31% overall approval rating, and a 65%-25% rating on his handling of the spill. By contrast, President Obama's overall approval rating in Louisiana is only 37%-57%, and on the spill his rating is 32%-62%."

1. it's sad that they think drilling is the only way they can make money
West Virginia seems similar when it comes to coal mining. even with all the deaths the people never seem to push for things to change.

i knew much of the hatred of Obama had to do with his limiting some drilling.

2. You would have been alright there if you hadn't gone into attributions on the "hated of Obama" bit
That just made the whole post look lame.

4. People like to have jobs
If the offshore boys could switch en-masse to installing and maintaining wind farms I think there'd be a lot less resistance to the transition. But people are afraid of losing their livelihood.

5. They probably also think Republicons are really 'conservative'
Despite vast 'borrow-and-spend' FAIL evidence to the contrary, and diaper-clad moral turpitude up the wazoo.

Some people just do not do facts.

It's hard to get worked up with sympathy when people sell out their own safety & futures for the almighty dollar...and even when a catastrophe happens, still refuse to see thew light:(

10. "Louisianans still don't want Jindal to run for president in 2012 "
At the same time, though, Louisianans still don't want Jindal to run for president in 2012 -- only 34% say he should, to 55% against it. Republicans favor it by only 50%-35%, Democrats oppose it 23%-73%, and independents are at 28%-55%.

8. "Louisianans seem more concerned about the closure of oil rigs than of beaches."

A total oversimplification of the issue by Mr. Debnam in order to get a good soundbite. Oil spills cause a lot more damage than closed beaches.

9. Jindal supporters aren't Obama supporters?
Go figure.

"President Obama's overall approval rating in Louisiana is only 37%-57%"

The President got 40% of the Lousiana vote. It's interesting that he's still polling about the same there.

11. Wonder if there's a correlation
between distance to the shoreline and opposition to drilling.

13. Simple solution: Make restoring the environment an industry.
Instead of all these people being out of work, start having them build artifical reefs to help restore some life in the Gulf.

People want jobs. Leverage their skills to do something productive and they'll be on board.
