Sea creatures flee oil spill, gather near shore

GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) --The danger to wildlife in the Gulf of Mexico is greater than the oil-covered pelicans that have been rescued.

Marine scientists are seeing some strange -- and troubling -- phenomena.

Dolphins and sharks are showing up in surprisingly shallow water just off the Florida coast. Mullets, crabs, rays and small fish congregate by the thousands off an Alabama pier.

Their presence close to shore means their usual haunts are badly polluted.

The crowding could cause mass die-offs as fish run out of oxygen. They'll also be easy targets for predators.

Already there have been increased shark sightings in shallow waters along the Gulf Coast.

So far, 783 birds, 353 turtles and 41 mammals have died

2. get mega-sized backhoes out there & make sandbars offshore
deep enough to try to accomodate these poor creatures. If big enough the oil should catch on these sandbars instead. Include boulders too perhaps to start it faster.

5. How inconvenient for BP, that they are going off to die in a dark hole in the middle of the Gulf
I'm sure that's what they would prefer.

9. Dolphins don't vote. Sea life was mentioned only as 'bounty' in last night's speech. nt
