Cop rescues kitten in intersection

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WTHI) - Trooper Doug Hutchinson daily patrols State Road 37 for speeding cars, motorists who follow too closely and the usual aggressive driver. Those daily patrols by the law enforcement community help save lives and keep the streets safe.

Add one kitten to those saved lives.

Trooper Hutchinson received the call of “debris” in the roadway in the intersection of SR 37 and Tapp Road, just south of Bloomington and directly responded. He did not find any debris.

What he did find was a slightly injured kitten that was wandering aimlessly through the multi-lane intersection.

Trooper Hutchinson was able to stop and position his patrol vehicle in the intersection to shelter the kitten from oncoming traffic, ultimately snatching the feline back into the safety of his patrol car.

Motorists enjoyed what they saw, giving Trooper Hutchinson many “thumbs up” and quick applause as the traffic resumed its flow.

After attempts to find a good home for the kitten through the Monroe County Animal Shelter, Trooper Hutchinson has now adopted the kitten himself. “Lucky” is now recovering nicely, making his home with Trooper Hutchinson in Lawrence County.

Or she will sneak up quietly and lie down right behind a person doing dishes - so when they step back she gets stomped on. She's kind of strong on the stupid gene - I've come home from work and caught stretched out sunning herself on the warm asphalt in the center of the road in front of my house, in the same way a person might stretch out in a hammock.

I mean, feral cats are not friendly to humans, and the fact that the cop was able to get this kitten shows it was probably not a stranger to our species. Feral cats run from humans.

Maybe this guy just has a magic touch and maybe the kitten has exhibited anti-social behavior not mentioned in the news stories, but my guess is that it was a dump.

Good for Trooper Hutchinson, he has gained a friend we hope he will have for many years.

13. I found a dog in an intersection in L.A. one time when it was pouring down rain.

Opened my back car door and the dog hopped right in. Took him home, examined his collar, and called
the phone number. Owners were thrilled to hear I had their baby. Apparently the dog freaked over thunder/lightening and it had been left in the fenced yard when they went out prior to rain starting, and it managed to get out!

Very happy reunion later that day.

43. I often get honked at and/or 'the finger' because I stop to pick up turtles in the road

they start the trek across, but many can't make it...because obviously they go back in their shell when a car goes by closely...and it takes a very long time to get to the other side. (Then there are a few drivers who will deliberately run over them, I've seen that happen many times...I can't even begin to describe how much I want to revenge on those kinds of filth).

Then we have also many 'dumped' pets, mostly dogs and some kittys...the people from the city think "we can just drop it off out there in the country, someone will take it in and it will be fine."

No, most of them just die from starvation or as roadkill, you inhumane assholes. I live in an area where dumping unwanted 'pets' is almost an everyday occurence...and we and almost everyone else who lives around here have, and continue to, take in SOME of them but it costs a lot of money to have them treated, get shots, spayed/neutered and fed...we can only accomodate a small percentage, so here is what happens: they get shot and killed which is, to be brutally honest, a less awful fate than slow death by starvation or injuries from being hit by cars.

They left it and her food bag in the alley behind my place.
They left the collar on the her, which p&ssed me off because if no one had taken her in she might have eventually choked to death
She caught two breaks
1. It was winter, so my cat was locked indoors, but he knew she was there, which told me she was there
2. I was able to find a good home for her quite easily

someone rang the doorbell. I answered the door and there was a tiny white kitten, left at my doorstep, just old enough to be weaned. I looked for the "owner" but didn't see a soul. The complex only allowed two pets, and I already had two dogs. None of my neighbors claimed her, and I couldn't find a good home for her, so I ended up taking her to the Humane Society. I have no idea why she was left at my door, and not any of my neighbors. I guess I just look like an animal lover?

We're way out in the boondocks too, but I've never seen an abandoned pet out here--just haven't happened along at the right time, I guess, because I'm sure it happens. But there are too many feral cats.

The deer had been hit on the nose by the car's mirror; as we were driving home one evening, there was the deer curled in the lane with her head up, looking alert but dazed. So I got around and pulled over. The guy who hit the deer was pulled over and kind of in shock too.

Your pal, Blanche, into action!!: I said, OK, I'll go back and shine my lights on her so oncoming cars can see, while you get pulled around and take my place.

So I did that, and then the deer got up and kind of stood around, obviously in shock and confused. She'd been hit in the snout, but her jaw wasn't hanging oddly, so that was good. So I just jumped out of the car and went to the deer, to direct her back off the road into the field. Some idiot in a big red truck zipped through as I was walking up to her, but thank god she didn't stumble into his path.

I patted her butt as I walked her across; she stopped and zoned out a couple times, so I patted and clapped my hands to get her moving again. A couple other cars came along in both directions and stopped; I saw after the deer was safely off the road that the guys got out to chat with the driver. Sadly no applause for me ;) but the driver did thank me and Mr Splanchnik said I done good :) And I know that deer thanked me :D But most of all, I felt really lucky to be the one to come along at the right time to have been ABLE to help.

usually new chevy 2500 diesels between work and home. They generally have 2000lbs of tools on board. I park them in the traffic lane (where safe) between myself and traffic and snag turtles. Been doing this for 5 years. In that time ONE person swerved to hit a turtle and came close to hitting me, which I considered attempted murder. No one else around, no traffic. I STRONGLY considered not stopping when that person stopped at the stop sign down the road. a 70mph rear drivers door side collision between a shitty old chevy cavalier and a brand new vehicle over 9000lbs would have ruined their day. Just another at fault accident. If I was 100 percent sure he tried to kill me intentionally I would have hit him.

Had they stopped somewhere I would have beat that bastard blind. And I am a very laid back person.

dogs, cats--makes no difference--I stop, put on the flashers, watch carefully and herd them to safety. Or with the turtles, pick them up and carry them in the direction they were headed.

You gotta be careful doing that stop in the road act. We had a woman in our community run over when she stopped on a main thoroughfare to rescue a critter and ASSUMED that the oncoming car saw her. Bummer.


That kitty reminds me of Bubba, my no-longer-a-tomcat who was found by a friend who was loading construction waste into the back of a dumptruck. There were two four-week old kitties who survived so the neighbor took one and my friend brought the other to my wife, who had an afterschool daycare program, figuring she would get one of the families to adopt it. Luckily for Bubba I quickly became enchanted with him and decided he was staying at OUR house. Now he's lying on the coffee table, swatting at the dog's tail, trying to "precipitate an incident". (They're good friends)

69. This is how we got our orange tabby, Charlie:

I had to drive Mrs. Rat to work one day, and we were making our way across a very busy bridge. About halfway across, I saw what appeared to be a stuffed toy in the middle of the road. And I mean right in the middle - dead center of the bridge and huddled between the yellow lines on the road. As we passed, I looked out the window and said to Mrs. Rat, "Its a kitten, and its alive."

We didn't have to say another word.

As soon as we had crossed the bridge, I made a very, very fast U-turn and headed back toward the kitten. I put the car sideways, blocking all lanes of rush-hour traffic, and ran to the kitten. As the other motorists honked and cursed (oh yes, I could hear it), I held the kitten aloft for all to see - and the cursing turned to cheering! We took him right to our vet, where his sole injury from the ordeal was an abrasion on his nose (which is pretty amazing considering he was literally inches from cars going 40-60 mph). After his vet trip, we took him home, named him Charlie, and added him to the brood.

Only with a family of ducks....They are safe now, but were really in some danger for a while. I know the man who saved them, and I am not surprised at his actions. My kitty's vet is the one mentioned in the article.

75. If you want to find a truly PROFESSIONAL police officer, look for a state trooper.

State troopers are usually head-and-shoulders above municipal officers and deputy sheriffs, in professional terms. The reason: far more and better education and training. If every sworn officer in this country were similarly educated and trained, complaints about police conduct would take a nose dive.
