My hubby and I were both laid off today. We both worked for the
same company and they are closing our office here in San Antonio. We dealt with new home construction , and the business is just not there anymore.

We've been watching new construction housing fall consistantly for over a year, and I guess there will be no recovery anytime soon in that area.

Many of our customers, Mainstreet Homes, Gehan Homes, Toll Bros.....all of them are going down.

:(

It's going to be diffrent....but I think we'll be o.k. The job market here in SA is still in pretty good, and I'm sure we'll fall into something.

5. Oh my God -- I'm so sorry! Was it a shock or did they let you know it was
coming? (Even if you do know it's coming it's still a shock when it happens.)

Glad to hear that the job market is pretty good there, so wishing you the best! :pals:

8. Sorry to hear, Saphire...
hope you and hubby are able to find something soon.

I agree with you, though. I don't think we're going to be seeing 'recovery' any time soon.

9. Thanks for the support. We're both kinda in shock I guess.
tomorrow is going to be strange (actually the next few days). Hubby had been with the company for 12 years, I've been there 8 years.

Not going to work will be heartbreaking for us.

11. I've been laid off before, and so has my husband
though not at the same time, fortunately.

In every case it wound up for the best -- you'll probably get a job that you like better, or even use this opportunity to start your own home-based business. In my case, I wrote a novel and got it published, then started a career in journalism after losing a marketing job. My husband, a lawyer, got a job with a better firm that paid more.

Being out of work for a short time also gives you time to catch up on everything you never had time to do -- clean the house, plant a garden, play music, spend more time with family.

Best of luck to you both!

Go to this website...

https://services.twc.state.tx.us/UBS/security/selfRegister.do

It takes a few weeks to get benefits.

You should probably also try to get the TX equivalent of food stamps...

http://www.hhsc.state.tx.us/help/food/foodstamps/index.html

I've been homeless a few times here in Houston, so I do know a few things about it - spent some time at the Star of Hope.

Get your applications in ASAP, as you'll probably have to go to the various offices in person to get the benefits. UI can be done over the phone, food stamps and medicaid typically require an office visit - expect to spend at least one day for each.

Both (food stamps and medicaid) may take a week of sitting around in an office. Take books and music/radio or you'll go crazy (which might help).

Or, you can go to live at a shelter for a month or so, they can streamline the processes and get you medicaid (in Harris County it is called a 'Harris County Gold Card') and food stamps ('Lonestar Card'). UI requires either a web account or telephone.

I'm on the cusp of all this, I have 4 organizations looking to hire me at the company where I am currently a contractor, with my contract ending 7/31. We'll see what happens. If any of you are familiar with the intricacies of HP enterprise print or office print (down to how to fix the printer software and/or hardware), or know HPUX or OpenVMS to the internals level, please PM me as I can only accept one of the 4 jobs. I would be pleased to recommend someone from here after I review their resume'.

We can get through this together. We will not get through this apart.

Best Regards, cdsilv.

working for me were really hungry for work. Telecom type work, at least.

Good luck in finding work.
