A brief conversation with a freeper type at work today

Where I work, we are required to wear steel toed boots and the Union has bargained in an annual shoe allowance to make it easier to get said shoes. This year it is $150.00. Ok, not a lot, but it is appreciated and the guys can do whatever they want with the money. Buy shoes, drink beer, save it, whatever. Anyway, when we got the checks, a guy started complaining about "Obama is taxing us to death", etc. Well lo and behold, there was no federal tax taken out of our boot checks! So I had to reply to the teabagger, freeper, whatever you want to call him, "Look, no federal tax taken out of our checks. Yep, Obama is taxing us to death all right. Looks like a tax CUT to me." The guy said, "Well, this check ain't very much anyway. Why should it be taxed?" I said, "It shouldn't and it isn't, except for Social Security and Medicare." Him, "Well, why should I pay that shit?" Me, "Well when you retire, it might be nice to have. Now you are paying in and when you get old, you can collect some of it back". He just shook his head as he walked away, muttering something about Obama, assholes and dirty liberals.
I just walked away too, secure in the knowledge that at least I tried. It likely won't change his mind, but at least I tried and I kept my cool, which I sometimes don't do.

6. It was mentioned/reported that many people didn't notice a decrease in their

taxes in their returns this year. Not that there wasn't a decrease, just that they didn't notice. Others did.

People like your co-worker probably don't even look, just keep parroting Boehner and assume it's true. Frustrating. Good thing I wasn't wearing steel-toed boots around him. :evilgrin: Too tempting.

8. Obama lowered the guy's taxes. The rate he was paying had nothing to do with Obama.

More people got refunds this year than most other years. But of course the guy did not hear that on wing nut radio so he will never think that since those types let the talk shows do their thinking for them.

I work with people like that also and I am dumbfounded to understand what goes on in their heads. Logic and rational thinking just doesn't cut it with them.

Whenever I have this sort of conversation, that is all it is good for---entertainment and mental stimulation. But these people will never listen to a thing you are saying---buzz buzz buzz, you are just an annoyance. Not listening, not hearing, not gonna change their minds. Wish I had some magic way to change this.

Because A) It would have been a primitive language he could easily understand.
