Peace Activist Arthur Gish Dies

Arthur G. Gish, who left his family's Lancaster County farm as a teenager to spend 50 years as a peace activist, died Wednesday in a tractor accident on his organic farm near Athens, Ohio.

Gish, 70, was disking a field on a tractor when the tractor overturned, pinning him beneath, according to Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly. Gish died when the tractor caught fire, Kelly said.

Gish was married to fellow activist Peggy Gish, who was in Iraq at the time of his death.

As a teen, Gish declared himself a conscientious objector and worked in Europe from 1958-60 through Brethren Volunteer Service, an arm of the Church of the Brethren.

He later worked in the Civil Rights Movement and was part of the protest movement against the Vietnam War.

Since 1995 and until recently, he worked in the Middle East with the church's Christian Peacemaker Teams. He often worked in the West Bank city of Hebron and in the Palestinian village of At-Tuwani. He also spent time in Iraq.

A widely circulated Associated Press photo in 2003 showed Gish standing in front of an Israeli tank in Hebron as it tried to destroy a Palestinian market.
