L.A. County workers identify the 50 people likeliest to die on skid row's streets and find them housing, with no requirement that they quit drugs, stop drinking or seek psychiatric help.

1. Thanks for the link.
Some years back NPR did a series about the working poor in this country. I'll never forget that the reporter who did the story said that the one thing those people needed was money. They had absolutely no cushion, so even a minor car repair, or relatively trivial illness that required a doctor's visit and some prescription medication could sink them.

Just a few months into the program, questions were becoming inescapable: Was it possible to keep people under a roof, even if their addictions and mental illness remained untreated??

Was "whatever it takes" even close to enough?



they didn't do "whatever it takes".
