Burn the Confederate Flag Day - 12 Sep 10!
.

Burn the Confederate Flag Day is a protest against the right's exploitation of racial prejudice for political gain. We urge you to burn the Confederate flag, a long-time symbol of racial hatred, on Sept 12, the date when the racially-divisive Tea Party holds its annual hate fest.

That's not even the Confecderate flag. That's a battle flag.

10. It is A confederate flag. It is not the flag of the confederacy.
It is, in any case, the most recognized symbol of the confederacy.

19. From what I can see it is NOT a Battle Flag, it is rectangular
Edited on Tue Aug-03-10 12:28 PM by happyslug
Which it is either a Confederate Naval Jack (used on Warships only) OR the flag adopted by the KKK in 1905. If you want to be technical, go all the way.

The key is NOT what that piece of material meant in 1865 or even 1905 but what it means TODAY. The Swastika had been a symbol of good luck for Millennia (Only in the late 1800s was it adopted by Anti-Semitic Germans as an anti-Jewish symbol, from these early anti-semitics the Nazis picked up the Symbol in the 1920s). The God Apollo was often shown to have a Swastika craved on the back of his seat on Mt Olympus. Do we say that since the Swastika was a symbol of good luck for Millenia, that when a person paints one he is saying "Good Luck" today? NO, we understand what the Swastika means TODAY and when we see it we understand what it stands for TODAY. When someone draws a Swastika, he is NOT saying good luck, we all know what he is saying. The same with the Confederate Flag when shown in public (Not in some Civil War re-enactment, which tend to use actual copes of the Square Confederate Battle Flag instead of the rectangular Flag adopted by the KKK in 1905), we know what the people flying the rectangular "Confederate Flag" are saying when it is flown (Some people fly it as a symbol that they are a rebel, but most such claims are just cover stories).

I'm in the South and I have noticed that folks from the North who post on this board talk far more about the Civil War than Southerners do in everyday conversations with friends, co-workers, family, etc.

Your post made me laugh out loud, truly.

13. Seems pretty silly to me
Thinking you need to burn a symbol to show your contempt for it gives the symbol too much power.

I support the right of anyone to burn anything, however -- so long as they own what they burn, aren't creating a safety hazard, and aren't creating a lot of needless pollution. It's important to protected such protests as free speech.

I don't think people who engage in this particular form of protest, however, are really helping their own causes very much.

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/08/one-progressives-natl-scheme-to-burn-confederate-flags-at-tea-party-rallies.php?ref=fpa

An anonymous liberal blogger in Washington state hopes that progressives across the country will show up to tea party rallies on September 12 and -- if it's legal -- light up a confederate flag so tea partiers can watch it burn.

"I think that it would start a great conversation about race and about how it's being used for political gain right now," the blogger, who preferred to be identified by his online handle, "General J.C. Christian," told me Monday. "I can imagine people showing up at the tea parties, which I'll do at my local one, and the tea party backers will start explaining why is about state's rights, not slavery, and all that and basically hang themselves."

"I think that will be one of the messages that come out of the tea party events if my idea works out and people actually embrace it," he added.

General JC Christian, who writes the satirical anti-conservative blog Jesus' General, says he's serious about Burn The Confederate Flag Day, which he announced Sunday night on Facebook and the web. And while there's no sign so far that Burn The Confederate Flag Day will spread across the nation, the idea seems sure to at least ruffle some tea party feathers.

About a 1/2 ass statement. 145 fucking years ago, fucking move on.Go exercise your 1st Amendment rights I'll back you up but just like burning the Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, and The Star-Spangled Banner it is tacky. I am a Southerner and not proud of that flag but too many good men died like pawns under it. I have buried way too many soldiers while in a Regular Army Honor Guard to like seeing our flag burned. If this makes any of you proto- commies mad, so be it. Don't mean nothin'.

85. I know & thats good, it is time to move on, but help me
here. If the Communist state, E Germany, for instance, was a good example of the quality of life that that particular economic system produced, why do some of my way more left than me socialist friends want to return to that system? Is it wrong to think Pollyanna may have a seat at their table? I do believe in the economic system of socialism as it seems more able than the communist and the running dog capitalist pig system that enables the power and wealth to be controlled by the few. The few on either side do not care a whit for you and I. I have some vivid images in my brain of East Berlin that are history. The 'Showplace' of the East was grey, sullen and not cheerful. BTW I am not fighting the cold war , I won it. Not Rayguns but me and the thousands of other guys that stood in the path of the Red Army. All you had to do to see that was being around Bad Hersfeld in the Fulda Gap, FRG around October 6, 1973. When Nixxxon called his DEFCON3. But keep on razzing on. The cold war seems like a good one now. Most of our deads were from being drunk or overdosing on drug du jour, sort of like not war. Peace R

72. Ok...
Did those pawns allow, condone or benefit from slavery? If they stood up against the South, good on them - they should be honored. If they fought for the South - Grant, Sherman et al should have pushed them into the sea - it probably would have saved the USA from 145 years of racism, the KKK and other concentrations of morons who just cannot understand the concept of equality.

I neither support Nazis nor Confederates. I see people driving around Missouri all the time with stickers that say "It's Heritage Not Hate" - these people are ignorant or have no empathy for those who suffered under the evils of slavery. Put these people in a field under a hot sun to work, whip them a few times just for the fuck of it and return them to society after a few months when they have gained empathy.

Lastly, your use of the term "proto-commie" is interesting. What exactly is a proto-commie? Can you cite a few pages of the Communist Manifesto to help out with a definition?

A proto-commie is a person who: (place definition here).

"Can you cite a few pages of the Communist Manifesto to help out with a definition? " No, see above. It is good you aren't supporting the Nazis & the Confederates, I'm with you. The pawns are dead and they would be the ones to answer your question. It probably wouldn't have " saved the USA from 145 years of racism, the KKK and etc." Yankeeland is more racist than the south. There are several midwestern states that proudly fielded regiments that served honorably in the Union Army that have bigger Klans ( Klavern? ) than any southern state. Why is that?

It makes no sense to me, put it differently and maybe we can talk. It sounds though like you are being judgmental without reason, I have never supported racism. Through the years one of my favorite quotes is " racism is the tool that keeps them on top and us on the bottom." I will reserve the right to not be fucking nice upon an unsatisfactory answer. Have you been to Montana, Ohio, and or Michigan? Much more racist than the south because it is stealthy.

96. The Confederate States of America was not dishonorable.
Holocaust has nothing to do with the Civil War. Evenso, that history also should be preserved. Descendents of German soldiers have nothing to be ashamed, nor do descendents of Confederate soldiers. Let's make an effort to grow up and live in the present. Leave the past to the ghosts.

36. Swastika...
...is an important part of WORLD history.

It would be very nice if we could, someday, return this symbol to its previous status of life and beauty. It is a cool symbol - sadly it was bastardized by some real bastards.

Just introducing schools of thought different from your own. But then who has the courage to examine racism from the other side?

And yet you don't see too many Germans clinging to their Nazi flags, complaining about how the Nazis were simply misunderstood, do you?

I may purchase one simply to burn it. Initially I was simply ambivalent about the whole affair, but after reading the Usual Suspects claim it is as petulant or simply misguided, I guess it can't be too far off base. :P

On a somewhat more serious note though, it does appear to speak to them in one of the few languages they understand. I've never been a serious flag waiver or flag burner, and will most likely never be one, but this sounds cute.

76. OK. You don't like to burn the flag? Piss on it instead in the name of Dixie.
Problem solved.

That "so-called" heritage includes the whoring of my people for profit, the rape of my ancestors, and their continual exploitation even to this day for the benefit of white privilege and institutional racism.

So it's not only heritage; it is a symbol of white supremacy and hate.

97. I'm pretty much against the burning of symbols
The irony of this is that you have to guy buy a confederate flag to burn it which only increases the demand for production and lines the pockets of the people who produce them.

Besides that, it's just a little to fascist for me.
