Poll question: Posting on all
I believe it is important that if members "unrecommend" a post they should at least show ownership of that choice. Even if they do not comment on it, at least the OP has the option of contacting them to ask why. Hopefully, it would also reduce the shenanigans by all parties of "dumping" unrecs. on posts that are not in line with their beliefs.

What do you think?

1. No more on unrecs than on recs.
And I don't always care enough to write a post. Leave it the way it is.

Oh, and unrec. See above.

3. I've come around to the belief
that recs and unrecs should be done away with completely. The reccing system only causes mischief.

5. Not a bad idea!
It just seems to me it is getting like the MSM......telling us what is and is not important.

6. I half agree.
Unrecs should be eliminated. They're worthless.

14. I have to ask
Why do you think recs are worthwhile?
Wouldn't a thread that is interesting and informative automatically get many replies without the need to rec?
How does reccing the thread make a difference in the quality of what is posted?

21. Recs are worthwhile because they highlight the most interesting content on the site.
Replies alone can't do that. Often replies are a sign of controversy, not quality. You're not going to spend a lot of time talking about something that you agree with.

I don't think rec or unrec affect the overall quality of what is posted. What it does is it promotes the most interesting stuff. I think Unrec makes DU less interesting. A lot of interesting but unpopular items don't get the attention they deserve. That's why threads with 200 replies and 3 recs stink. There's a large number of people on DU that find that topic interesting. It should be promoted. I don't buy the argument that unrec affects the quality. All it does is drive down everything while diminishing the prominence of less popular opinion. It doesn't give a full view of DU.

4. I don't care. I've never understood the problem people have with it.
I'm not a score keeper either so maybe that's it. Except in Scrabble. Scrabble doesn't count. Or it does...however you want to say it.

8. I think, if you unrec a post, a small -1 should appear as a post...
and if you rec a post, a +1 should appear.

This will naturally lead to a lot of arguments. People who feel that their cause is being attacked by stealth unrec'rs may go on missions against the unrec'rs.

Personally, I never unrec posts. If I have something to say, I'll post.

I suppose you can view the rec and unrec as DU's equivalent of casting a secret ballot, but here it creates a lot of discontent. The only question I have would be, Will public knowledge of who rec's and unrec's a OP be throwing gasoline on a flame war?

15. You make a very good point.
It may be that it would just cause more antagonism.

I guess it bothers me because with limited time to get on DU most days, I like to go to Greatest Threads....unfortunately what gets on their tends to be philosophically biased from, using your term, stealth unrec'rs.

If I unrec a post, I comment on it.

16. The simple answer to the gasoline on a flame question is yes.
If DUers knew who recced and unrecced they would retaliate based on whether the rec/unrec was from "their group" or the "other group".
DU is not a peaceful place and it would go up in towering flame wars of rec/unrec.

Quit being so timid about your opinions.

22. I think that would cause more problems than it would solve.
There'd be scrutiny of everyone reccing and not reccing threads. "Why didn't x "rec" this thread that's so obviously popular?" It's not the best way to go.

23. Unrecommend - because it's another ridiculous OP complaining about unrec.
Contrary to your position, no one ever thinks it's great being told their thread is inane, pointless, and self indulgent.

Or will you be the first to do so?
