Some more good news (watch heads explode...) Static kill appears to work! The BP Gusher is dead!

It's not over-over yet, but according to the reports, enough mud has been pumped down the well, that the well has reached a static condition. In other words, the weight of thousands of tons of mud is counteracting the the pressure of the oil, so in theory, if the cap on the well were to be popped off, nothing would come out.

The well is dead!

They're still going to cut into the well with the relief well and pump in cement to make sure the well stays dead, but as of NOW, the well has been killed!

:hippie:  :toast: :bounce:  :grouphug: :fistbump: :headbang: :yourock: :woohoo: :applause:

Now on to cleaning up the mess, making lots of noise to force BP to clean up the whole mess rather than cheaping out and sweeping the damage out of sight, and holding them financially responsible for all the damage...

1. This should be added to that list of BP accomplishments I see posted from time to time.
They had it under control from day 1. All it took was patience.

6. Good news
I could give a rats ass about BP, but that is great news for the people of the gulf and the environment of our entire world. Now on to face the repercussions of all the damage corexit has wrought upon the entire gulf region. I think very few can comprehend the potential damage the corexit may have done to the gulf ecosystem. It could have rendered miles upon square miles of ocean floor dead and incapable of supporting life for many years to come.

We have yet to be able to understand the full ecological impact of this disaster! But, boy, I sure hope the managers of the oil rig get to keep their "ahead of schedule" bonuses they were earning before they made the thing blow up!

9. Only 75% of it has miraculously been consumed by nature...
Should we refer to Carol Browner not as head of the EPA, but of the eBPa?

8. They may need to pump more mud at a later date, per CNN. Does that make the well undead? n/t

10. I never claimed that all work is done, but this is a significant milestone.
If the well has a methane burp, or some condition changes, then yes, more mud may be needed.

And the well still has to be cemented from the top and from the relief well to drive a stake through its heart.

But still, it's very good news to see that the pressure at the BOP has been brought from 7,500 psi to zero.

16. That's the kicker. I can't see of a way that the Corexit can be cleaned effectively.
Before the dispersants are used, oil can be cleaned relatively easily. It has a far different density than water which makes it easier to separate. With the dispersant, it makes it far more difficult to cordon the oil off. Think of the stuff they add to Italian dressing to make the oil and vinegar less likely to separate after it's been shaken. The oil is mixing with the water far more easily now, the Corexit has done nothing of benefit for the area, it's just making the oil more difficult to spot.
