Report: BP well leaked nearly 207 million gallons

NEW ORLEANS — A federal report on the Gulf oil spill says a total of nearly 207 million gallons leaked from the blown-out BP well.

The report released Wednesday says a little more than 172 million gallons of that made it into the Gulf. It says nearly 35 million gallons was held back by a temporary containment cap.

The report was released by the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

When the government claims that 3/4ths of the leaked oil has been captured, burned or dispersed, they are using the 207 million number. One quarter of 207 million is still 51,750,000 gallons of oil in the water. Compare that to the estimated 11 million gallons of oil spilled in Alaska, and you can see the positive picture is just spin
