The Top Ten Most Embarrassing CNN Gaffes

The Top Ten Most Embarrassing CNN Gaffes

In the September issue of Vanity Fair, contributing editor Michael Wolff analyzes the triumphs and failures of CNN, the 30-year-old cable news outlet that’s lately lost some of its once-undisputed cultural relevance to the flashy sensationalism of its more conservative colleague, Fox News. Wolff characterizes CNN’s traditionalist approach to earnest, straightforward news broadcasts as a fatalist acceptance of the rise of punditry. “At CNN, they tend to see the odds as painfully overwhelming—there is just no way to compete with this new desire for opinion and for political identification,” he writes. While the network’s profits are reaching record highs, CNN executives are concerned with their programs’ lack of, as Wolff puts it, “buzz.” This is not exactly true. CNN is a regular component of the cultural conversation—perhaps just not in the way the network intended. Political, entertainment, and journalism blogs are awash in unintentionally delectable, infinitely embarrassing television clips highlighting the network’s typos, gaffes, and malapropisms. After the jump, watch VF Daily’s ten favorite CNN bloopers.

2. I must have been in a closet
or at sea, because I missed that whole Blitzer Jeopardy gem. Thanks for posting that.

I might have gone into seclusion in a monastery for a year if I did that. Poor guy. I guess being a beltway boy in seclusion in his "Situation Room" is his whole life.

3. Speaking of gaffes....
Oprah's best friend, Gayle King, once worked at a local TV station...channel 3 in Hartford, CT.

The winter of 1995 was particularly snowy up here, and Ms King was making a plea for people to give blood because the supply was running low.

Anyway, I was listening as she made her plea, then added "So please...come on down to the bloodmobile and give blood...it's just a little prick"

the look on her face was absolutely priceless....

It was obvious she didn't know whether to apologize or just act like she hadn't just said what she said...

4. Even on CNN's absolutely worst day they still are 1000000% better than Faux News.

Another DUer complied a list of just the Faux News gaffes where they misidentify the party of the politician on the screen - usually in a way that makes democrats look bad and republicans look good.

Plus, as far as they are concerned all African Americans look the same to them. Just yesterday they did a piece on Maxine Waters and showed a photo of Shirley Sherrod. That's the 3rd time they made that kind of mistake.

Media Matters notes that this isn't the first time Fox has had a problem telling African-Americans apart. In 2006 the network aired footage of former Tennessee congressman Harold Ford, Jr. during a story on then-Senator Barack Obama. In 2007 the network mixed up Rep. John Conyers with former Louisiana congressman William Jefferson

10. Well....
they did erroneously ask him if he owned a gym... and they made the mistake of interviewing him to begin with, so it's at least partially their gaff. :smoke:
