Google and Verizon Near Deal on Pay Tiers for Web
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/05/technology/05secret.html?_r=2&src=twt&twt=nytimes

WASHINGTON — Google and Verizon, two leading players in Internet service and content, are nearing an agreement that could allow Verizon to speed some online content to Internet users more quickly if the content’s creators are willing to pay for the privilege.

The charges could be paid by companies, like YouTube, owned by Google, for example, to Verizon, one of the nation’s leading Internet service providers, to ensure that its content received priority as it made its way to consumers. The agreement could eventually lead to higher charges for Internet users.

Such an agreement could overthrow a once-sacred tenet of Internet policy known as net neutrality, in which no form of content is favored over another. In its place, consumers could soon see a new, tiered system, which, like cable television, imposes higher costs for premium levels of service.

Any agreement between Verizon and Google could also upend the efforts of the Federal Communications Commission to assert its authority over broadband service, which was severely restricted by a federal appeals court decision in April.

2. Didn't Google once take a stand FOR net neutrality?
bottom line..it's the money...

So, as we all (most) become more poor, the corporates work hard (it's hard work!) getting more of our money, or at the very least, alter our lives by trying to suck up any dime they can. :(

8. Our power company just went to a contracted meter reading service.
The service installs and READS and bills customers for the "smart meters".
Have no idea what the power companies do anymore, but I have read that in areas where the smart meters have been installed bills went up. Mine did, but since we have had such hot weather, I cannot tell if it is the heat or the cheat.
And how can OUR bill NOT go up if the power company can afford to hire a contractor to do the job?
Meanwhile, the power company rep. I talked to mentioned she was working from home! No more offices.
This is a state wide power company, btw.

So if I call the Power company about a bill problem, they will refer me to the contractor, who will refer me back to the power company.
Sound familiar?

9. Yep, USA, Inc. We are citizens of "The Corporation." Basically, you have no rights
unless there is profit for "The Corporation." The entire country is structured to benefit a P&L. The most greedy, those that acquire great wealth at almost any cost to anyone/anything are rewarded handsomely.

4. Most Americans will snooze through it all and then say WTF when their connect
charges rise. The FCC does not seem to be doing a whole lot about it anymore. And many Americans will say, "Oh, it's just too hard to understand."

7. so much for my gmail account.
I refuse to buy the bullets they use to shoot at us.

Never had Verizon.
Just got Linux ( FREE, guys, everything is free on Linux)

Mr. d. is dumping his AT&T cell account in Nov.

Remember back when the ISPs were talking about tiered service?
Then there was a huge outcry?

Looks like they got the big guys to kill net neutrality now.

look for more censorship to come.

we need a Web 3.
