GOP Fears Democratic Smear Campaign
Washington Whispers
By Paul Bedard

As predictions grow that they will take back control of the House, more Republicans see demons around the corner, readying to rob them of victory. The latest buzz is over worries the Democrats will launch an "October Surprise" smear campaign that will sour voters on the GOP. They have two concerns. First is over how the Democrats will use the video they've been taking of Republican candidates' speeches around the country; Democrats are fishing for embarrassing gaffes. Second: the GOP's ties to K Street, and recent reports of boozing with lobbyists.

5. When did reporting the truth about public political statements and lobbyist
contacts become a "smear campaign"?

Demanding to know if a candidate has stopped beating his wife; now that's a smear campaign!

7. That is a peculiar definition of "smear"
As Harry Truman said, I don't give the Republicans hell. I give them the truth, and they think it's hell.

And the Democratic Party, as a whole, should take note and use that to its advantage. Get in their face and they shrivel.

14. This is exactly what the media has been ignoring about the Dems
They have been assuming that the Dems aren't going to take the offensive, while we have our greatest offensive position since at least 1975.

I think the Dems are just biding their time for maximum effect, we tend to not blow our wads early like the GOP does. The attacks are going to be relentless, and most importantly all undeniably true. Honestly I can't wait, I think it's actually going to be fun this time.

Fishing?? No need for that -- the GOP has created a very heavily stocked pond. All the Dems need to do is sweep them up with a net.

26. They're inoculating themselves against poor results
For the last eight months or so, Republicans and their echo chamber idiots have been making big noises about how they're going to take back the House and the Senate, and boy oh boy are things going to change then, oh my brothers and droogs. And now, barely three months before their smashing victory, they're putting out the word that maybe their election scenarios aren't quite so rosy. The Democrats will almost surely lose some seats in both the House and the Senate, but they are going to maintain their majorities. The Republicans aren't articulating any alternative ideas, and people are noticing that their main strength is in just saying no. That doesn't put people back to work, and it doesn't curtail the ruinous policies the GOP enacted when they had their greedy mitts on the levers of power.

They aren't going to be robbed of victory, except in their own feverish little minds.
