McConnell scolds Franken for making faces from president's chair during speech
By Alexander Bolton - 08/05/10 06:00 PM ET

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) scolded Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) on the Senate floor Thursday for mocking him while he delivered a solemn speech on Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan.

The dust-up came seconds after McConnell delivered a speech on Kagan’s nomination shortly before the Senate voted to confirm her to the High Court.

Franken, who was presiding over the chamber from the dais, gesticulated and made faces while McConnell explained his opposition to Kagan, according to witnesses.

The television cameras broadcasting the speech on C-SPAN remained fixed on McConnell, missing Franken’s antics from the Senate president’s chair.

McConnell grew increasingly angry as Franken made fun of him before a crowded public gallery and Senate aides lining the chamber walls. Senate aides said they were shocked that Franken would flout the decorum of the chamber during such a solemn occasion.

After McConnell finished his remarks, he walked up to the dais and rebuked him.

“This is not 'Saturday Night Live,' Al,” McConnell said, making reference to Franken’s career as a writer and actor on NBC’s long-running comedy show, according to a witness who overheard the exchange.

A spokeswoman for Franken did not immediately return requests for comment.

Franken, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, voted for Kagan. Thirty-seven Republicans including McConnell voted against her.

Since Al wasn't on camera I wonder if it's really true he made faces?

at the President, but ought to command the utmost respect from the Dems???? Riiiight. LOL! Way to go AL!!

A tiny payback for some of the shit done to us (remember when Sensenbrenner shut off the mikes and turned out the lights on a meeting headed by John Conyers about stolen elections??). I feel like John Stewart. I'm as pissed as Weiner--all the time, and I would like to see a lot more of this open lack of respect because the Repugs have more than earned it. They should be mocked, period.

There is nothing left of it thanks to all those assholes in the rethuglican party.

So if Franken wants to have a little fun, I see no harm. What's to lose?

They obviously never were concerned with decorum anyhow.

43. Supreme dust up: Franken apologizes to McConnell
http://www.startribune.com/politics/100069754.html?elr=KArks:DCiUMEaPc:UiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUU

To some Republicans, it was like the return of Stuart Smalley.

With debate winding down on Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan, and freshman Sen. Al Franken presiding, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell took to the floor Thursday afternoon to deliver his closing statement against confirmation.

“The Leader thought I was disrespectful while he was giving his speech on (Solicitor) General Kagan,” Franken said in a carefully-worded statement. “He is entitled to give his speech with the presiding officer just listening respectfully. I went directly to his office after I was done presiding to apologize in person. He wasn’t there, so I’ve sent him a handwritten note.”

McConnell spokesman Josh Holmes confirmed that the note arrived. “Senator Franken apologized and that's a perfectly appropriate way of handling the situation,” he said.

69. Since the Congressional whores have lost all dignity
after selling themselves to the highest corporate bidder, they should have to expect no respect with a comedian in their midst. The more they are made fun of, the better because they might think twice about the stupid things about to come out of their mouths. Also, it should be pointed out that when they block a future Supreme Court judge who is qualified, they are not acting in the best interest of their country but that of their corporate masters and it seems almost treasonous to me. It will be the only way to turn the tables on them I'm coming to the conclusion.
