Armed teens say cow kill was self-defense
TRAVERSE CITY -- Two teens who police believe shot a large cow with a bow and arrow face a felony charge.

Kody M. Richardson, 17, and Jared R. Kaltenbach, 18, are accused of killing or torturing an animal. Neither had been arrested Thursday afternoon.

Police said they were responsible for the early July 13 shooting death of a large Angus cow on Bob Boeve’s Hoch Road farm in Garfield Township.

Investigators said Richardson fixed a flashlight beam on the animal while Kaltenbach aimed and shot with a compound bow.

Police were tipped off after a friend of the pair told his mother, who called to report the incident. The friend wasn’t with Richardson and Kaltenbach during the incident, but Kaltenbach showed the friend the cow shortly after the shooting, according to police reports.

Others also spoke with police after hearing chatter about the incident, including a woman who allegedly overheard the teens talking about “going on a big game hunt.”

Richardson allegedly admitted to police that he held a light while Kaltenbach shot, reports indicate. He said they shot the cow in self-defense because it came at them as they walked through a field, though they had to climb through an electric fence to get on the property.

Total failures as human beings. Stupid. Uneducated. Inhumane. We go through a lot of character flaws before we get to coward.

4. Those dangerous cows.
Hanging out on farms!

What were they doing on the farm, or in the pasture?

8. Wow. Consider the odds of getting attacked by a cow just at the moment you happen...
to be walking into its pasture with a bow. Uncanny.

14. Yep, Angus cows are probably the most vicious animals in existence. I found it
hard to get even a bull to stare angrily when I raised cattle.

16. Many years ago, my ex-wife and I decided to have a picnic. We
took a hike and found a really nice spot under an oak tree, near a little stream, and spread out our blanket and all the picnic goodies. After we'd been there just a little while, a bunch of cattle showed up. They formed a circle around us, all facing inward towards us, and just stood there and watched.

It was a little disconcerting, but it soon was clear that they meant us no harm. They were just curious about what a couple of humans were doing sitting under their shade tree, I guess. So, we finished our picnic. When we stood up to leave, the cattle just wandered off.

Funny stuff.
