11 year old charged in father's murder

KANSAS CITY - An 11-year-old boy is now charged in the murder of his father. The shooting happened Monday at a home at Woodland and Turner in Independence.

Police say the son is facing a second degree murder charge. Officers haven't released any names and are saying little about the case right now.

Neighbors who saw the boy right after the shooting told FOX 4 that the boy said his dad forced him to do it.

KANSAS CITY - An 11-year-old Independence boy is now charged in the murder of his father, but neighbors say that the boy is really the victim of a system that let him down.

The shooting happened Monday at a home at Woodland and Turner in Independence. According to one neighbor, the boy's father, David Paul Champ, forced the boy to shoot him. According to unconfirmed reports, the man threatened to cut off the boy's fingers if he did not shoot.

Officers haven't released any names and are saying little about the case right now.

"I think it's wrong they're charging this baby with 2nd degree murder," said neighbor Corina Everett. "I know the boy needs help, and I think it's wrong for Missouri, and whoever is watching an child activist group or attorney, needs to help this baby because it's not fair."

"That child needs an advocate," said Ravenscroft, who with Everett says that the boy is actually the victim in the case. Ravenscroft says that she knows the state had been called to the house in the past, but it wasn't until after the shooting that the house was posted as uninhabitable.
