So, is it just assumed that if you make too big a deal about "morals" that you have skeletons
in your own closet that you are hiding?

That seems to be true of repiglicans. If they crusade against gays, they hire escorts from rentboy.com. If they castigate a sitting President for his affair, they themselves are seeing prostitutes and wearing diapers. If they call for the death penalty for drug addicts, they are themselves addicted to prescription drugs.

Do they or their sheep-like cultists not see and recognize this pattern?

2. Those that protest the loudest in public always get my attention.
Hypocrites, all.

And the sheep are programmed from birth to kneel before authority by their preachers, never question their station in life, and be good vassals to the Squire.

3. Any person who claims to be about "family values" should always be presumed to be hiding something

"He says we need 'morality based laws' to 'protect us from ourselves'? This guy must have something that someone else can blackmail him with."

Turning out be a fact of life more and more with each passing day.

4. It may be similar to the frequently-heard statement by
True Christians™, which goes, more or less like this: "The only thing that keeps me from killing people is Jesus." You can substitute whatever nasty behavior you like, and someone will have said words to that effect.

5. Decency crusades of any type are *always* distractions.
If not from your own foibles, then from your friends'.
