Drift smoke made for a difficult day and a spectacular sunset (DIAL UP CAVEAT)

I was directly downwind of the Rooster Rock fire all day today (Friday 8-6-2010). I can sympathize with the residents of Moscow.


The visibility deteriorates in the SE quadrants, where we had beaucoup lightning a few days ago. By mid-afternoon I could not see into this area.


Smoke starts affecting the northwest quadrant. Later, China Hat (the near butte) would be barely visible.


The northeast starts down. Pine Mountain would disappear a little later.


The southwest starts getting smokey. This would be the last view of the Crater Buttes for the day.


Nick could care less!


Now the Rooster Rock fire's drift smoke ain't so bad!

6. It's in the works.

After all, a season in a fire lookout on Desolation Peak on the upper Skagit River (Ross Lake) is what inspired Jack Kerouac to write "Desolation Angels" and, to some extent, "Dharma Bums." Fire lookout duty also inspired Kerouac's fellow Beat Poets Philip Whalen (Sourdough Mountain Lookout) and Gary Snyder (Crater Mountain Lookout).
