Can someone please explain to me what the purpose is of Sunday morning talk shows?
Because I still don't get it after 20 years.

Thanks.

2. They started out as "hardline" journalists grilling elected officials, beyond
the press releases. They've degenerated to weekly talking points with the moderators assisting their guests.

10. Now they just "grill" other journalists.
Well . . . maybe "lightly toast" or perhaps "quick warm over".

5. So we can see ads from ADM (Archer Daniels Midland)
Overall they have become lame and repetitive of talking points.

6. An extension of the infomercials that run in the wee hours of the morning.
I've never seen anything said or done on these Sunday shows that was earth-shattering.

8. I always thought they were designed
to make people so bored that going to church becomes the most exciting way to spend the morning.

11. You have to go back about 40 for them to make any sense.
Or watch old SNL Point-Counterpoint "Jane you ignorant slut" skits.

They were mocking the early turn towards conservative bombast in news commentary.

I think one of the writers for those was a certain present senator from Minnesota.

12. What It Was...What It Is...
Back in the day when everyone was black and white, TV stations had to air public affair and news shows. These shows were loss leaders and buried along with religious shows on Sunday morning when viewership was at its lowest. From a necessary evil the networks soon saw that these shows became Mustsee TV with the growing beltway punditry and also a neat tool to influence politicians. It eventually helped pave the way to deregulate the public airwaves into the corporate plantation we enjoy today.

The world changed in the 24/7 cable era of the past 20 years. The Sunday Shows became a major talking platform that echoes on TV and hate radio throughout the week. It's not that there are many who watch the shows, but the soundbites get spread around like horsemanure and thus this gives these shows power.

17. The corporate media uses Sunday morning to tell us what we think
How else are we going to think just like drunks on the Washington cocktail circuit?

Most of the time, what we think is news to us.
