1. I would call up all of the sites and explain to them what happened
You have to wait to speak with the bank, but it doesn't hurt to do a little work in advance. If fraud was involved, those sites should reverse the charges since you didn't authorize them. They'll have investigate, but it's good to start the ball rolling early.

3. Pretty sure your liability is limited to $50 if you report it to the bank within 2 business days.
Check your card and call the toll free number to report it right away. They should answer 24/7. Link below has more info on liability. Good luck to you.

19. Stop it. According to FDIC Regulation E, the banks have to, by law, allow her
60 days from the first statement the charge appeared on. But every bank I know will allow 120 days, because that's the amount of time VISA will allow for the banks to recover funds from the merchants that are used during the fraud.

25. Not true.
Liability for debit cards is

up to $50 (some banks can and do have lower limit) if reported in less than 48 hours from theft,
Up to $500 (some banks can and do have lower limits) if reported in more than 2 days but less than 60 days.
Unlimited if reported more than 60 days from theft.

I'm just saying I personally haven't observed banks collecting anything from victims of fraud so long as they reported it timely enough. This is based on my own experiences and talking to people in similar circumstances, all of which is anecdotal.

50. What gives, why are you attempting to mislead the OP?
you reference 48 hours, but your link says nothing about 48 hours, it says TWO BUSINESS DAYS.

"...within two business days after learning of loss or theft of your card or code."

*BUSINESS DAYS*

*LEARNING OF*

Meaning something far different than you posted.

Happenen to me as well.
Look for a very small charge, say $1.00. If you have one you're a victim of a random number generator. A computer generates random numbers in the form of card number + exp date + ID code and attempts to buy something like a Netflix movie. When it completes a transaction it alerts the computer's owner and the thief uses your card for purchases. It almost always happens on weekends so your bank is closed. There is no defense against this kind of theft.

My bank's automated systems noticed the unusual activity and flagged the transactions as credit card use which gave time to resolve the issue before transferring funds. These transactions show as "pending" on line. I got all of my money back and the merchants ate the loss.

If you have a Paypal account cancel it immediately because that's the next target.

11. My debit card was stolen last month
On the weekend. I noticed the day it was missing and $460 was missing from my account. I called the bank (B of A) right away to cancel the card and was told I needed to wait until the charges were posted (they were pending) to file a fraud claim. As soon as the charges posted I called the claim dept. They credited me back the full amount the next business day and mailed me a form to sign stating I did not authorize the charges.

12. Sometimes it happens without your card even leaving your wallet or purse...
Last month Mr P found out that someone had used his debit card number to buy stuff in Boulogne, France.

He hasn't been out of this country since the late 1950s.

Needless to say, it was a pain in the ass for him to cancel the card, get a new one and have that one not work, get another one, then have to wait another week for the bank to send him, by USPS, a new PIN.

One thing I really would like to see happen, and I've only seen it at a local Goodwill store, is that ID is required when using a debit card in person.

Also, I would like to see debit cards come with one of those three-digit security code numbers that charge cards have and for all online merchants to ask for this number.

I think those two measures would cut down on the amount of debit card fraud, although I realize that it can't completely eliminate it.

Damn. Crooks suck.

15. When I sign my debit card...
I write the words "See ID" next to my signature.

Not every cashier who runs my card asks for my ID, but a lot of them do, and that's enough to at least minimize the damage if somebody steals my card.

Do you ever point out to a cashier who doesn't ask for ID that s/he should have?

Also, do you usually hand your ID over without being asked, or do you wait for the cashier to ask for it?

34. Some cards will actually refuse to except a charge in a foreign country
We found this out when Chase rejected my daughter's ATM card and her credit card when she tried to use them in Germany, where she was studying abroad. Luckily, it was the business day in the US and we had made sure that her phone could call the US - my husband was able to speak to the local Chase bank and get it turned back on because he was on the account.

Their policy is they needed to be told that foreign charges will occur. (We just went to Spain and I stopped in to let them know.)

20. It's always a good idea to get a police report anyway...
for one thing, it exonerates you, for another, it can go into a fraud data bank and the perpetrator could be caught. In many transactions, you are actually photographed when you use the card, like at an ATM. The other thing is, if telephonic or internet purchases were made, there is a trail that can be followed

32. My dad's credit card company is pretty good
I have a credit card with my dad, that covers certain expenses that he helps me out by paying for. One year I needed new glasses, so he said to put it on that card. Anywho, off at the eye doctor, racking up a bill (I had shitty vision insurance) and my dad's credit card company called him to verify the purchase after it was all said and done.

I think this was with Chase or Capital One.

33. Look on your card - there is usually a 24 hr / 7 day a week number
Call them immediately. You did the right thing canceling the card. I assume that was done without speaking to a person.

When you call them, you will likely be transferred to their identity fraud experts and they will help you straighten this out, getting those charges off your bill and getting you a new card. They will also likely have you put something with the credit agencies that would require them contacting you if anyone tries to use your identity for a new card there or elsewhere.

Sorry to hear that you had this experience - it is a pain.

42. File the police report anyway
It will help keep the problem from escalating. You can use the report to put a freeze on anyone taking out credit with the three major agencies. Any application for credit in your name will be flagged. You can still get credit with extra steps to verify your identity, but no more instant credit that the fraudsters use. Also, sometimes accounts get sold and unscrupulous collectors will go after you. A police report will put a stop to that. Unfortunately, I know all this from experience -- both as a victim of ID theft and from someone getting my ATM card numbers.

This kicker is that YOU are not the victim in this, according to the law. The bank is the victim and the cop told me they don't even pursue these small cases. Small to the bank, but huge to you when you can't pay a bill as you wait for it to get straightened out.

43. I had a similar incident happen to me
My bank (a local credit union) required me to fill out the paperwork before they would credit the charges. They also wouldn't even begin to process the paperwork until the charges were actually posted to my account. Also my bank reduces my available balance even before the charges are posted, so my balance was reduced on Friday evening, but it took until Tuesday before the charges actually appeared (my bank is notoriously slow about such things). However on Saturday they knew who the charges were from and we determined they were fraudulent. On Tuesday when the charges actually posted, they processed the paperwork, but it took until Thursday until my account was reimbursed.

The biggest hassle was the loss of my debit card, which took over two weeks to get replaced. Fortunately my wife's debit card has a different number so we didn't have to cancel that one.
