Fidel Castro has issued a dire warning of a nuclear "holocaust" in speech before Parliament

Castro warns of nuclear 'holocaust'
August 8, 2010

HAVANA (AFP) - – Ailing Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro has issued a dire warning of a nuclear "holocaust" as he mustered enough strength to address the country's parliament for the first time since his health crisis four years ago.

The soon-to-be 84 father of the Cuban revolution looked much fitter and more energetic than in previous appearances as he rose to the podium of the National Assembly Saturday to expand on his favorite theme of recent days -- alleged US preparations for a nuclear war in the Middle East.

In a series of Internet articles and public comments, Castro has been talking about his fear that the United States and Israel are about to launch a nuclear attack on Iran.

With assembly members listening intently, Castro said it would be up to US President Barack Obama to issue an order to carry out such a strike, but that, if he realized the consequences of this action, "he would not give it".

"Fate would have it that at this precise moment, the president of the United States would be an offspring of an African man and a white woman, of Muslims and Christians," Castro said. "He won't give the order if he becomes aware" of the devastation it would cause.

"We are making a contribution to that persuasive effort," said the Cuban communist leader.

He stressed that should nuclear war be unleashed, "the existing world order would not survive and would immediately collapse."

According to Castro, Obama's advantage was that he was not comparable to former US president Richard Nixon, who was forced to resign in 1974 amid a political scandal.

"Nixon was a cynical man," commented the Cuban leader. "That country has had a lot of cynical presidents, as well as some ignorant ones."

Mmmmmm .... "ignorant" presidents. Could Fidel have George W. Bush in mind? LOL BBI

1. Great speech
Viva Fidel - BBC carried a lot and surprisingly it received extensive coverage on Florida channels. M$Greedia can ignore what he said since apparently they love the idea of nuclear war - any fucking war is good for them - they thrive on death and misery.

3. You're right. We no longer have to worry about nuclear weapons or wars. This is 2010.

The United States no longer wages wars in foreign lands like we did during the Vietnam war.

6. sounds like it
"It was surreal to see Fidel Castro reappearing to tell us about the Iranian crisis and not the one in Cuba," a young Cuban artist told AFP on condition of anonymity.

5. Says the ex-Vassal of Moscow.
Who let first-strike offensive nuclear weapons be placed on the soil of his nation to appease his masters.

8. Well he wasn't exactly getting help from that noble country to the north.
As a matter of fact they were plotting his overthrow. Better a vassal of Moscow than a whore of America.

9. You're not familiar with the 1962 missile crisis or the Cuban revolution?

Kennedy was prepared to initiate nuclear war. The Soviet Union and Cuba backed down before that serious threat and negotiated an agreement to withdraw Soviet missiles from Cuba in exchange for two major concessions from the Kennedy administration.

The bottom line is the installation of nuclear weapons led to the Kennedy administration pledging not to engage in a second invasion of Cuba provided the Soviet Union removed all nuclear missiles from Cuba.

That was a fair agreement which guaranteed Cuba's independence.

And Cuba was never a "satellite" regime like the eastern European governments. The old "cold war" hawks would like us to believe they Cuba was but serious historians understand that was simply false. A "Stalinist" type regime similiar to what was imposed by Russian troops in eastern Europe never emerged in Cuba.

I urge you to read some history on Cuba written by progressives rather than rely on simplistic "cold war" talking points.

If you do, you'll discover that the Cuban "first-strike offensive nuclear weapons" were not intended to be first strike weapons. The Cubans made clear they would only use such weapons (tactical ones) on the ground, in Cuba, against any United States military invasion force and perhaps follow-up with nuclear missiles if the U.S. responded with a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union.

Hit the books!
