Your latest Cop-on-Dog violence update
AUGUST 8, 2010

Deputies serving eviction shoot family dog

With everything that's been going on this week with the Bear-Bear shooting by an off-duty federal officer, it should be noted that another officer of the law in Maryland took the life of a dog this week for questionable reasons. In this case out of Prince George's county, it was an officer serving an eviction notice who shot a dog upon entering the home. It's particularly interesting that this story quotes Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo, whose own dogs were killed by police in a wrongful bust. “They didn't want to wait and they executed an innocent animal, again," Calvo says here, adding, "At some point you have to ask yourself how many isolated incidents make a pattern of abuse and misconduct."

.... Maybe it's time for legislators to consider some sort of better rules for police and dealing with animals...

1. PG County cops.
Isn't the PG sheriff up for election this year? Cheye Calvo may have something to say about that.

2. Maybe - just maybe - the police need to
Screen their potential personal a little closer.

3. Are there any charges being brought against the cop?
Shooting a dog is such a despicable act. Is this department policy? I can't imagine anyone just shooting a dog for the hell of it.

4. This whole story is just brutal. Not only did they kill her dog, but they
entered the house when she was not at home to serve the eviction notice. The officers knew that there was a dog in the house and had contacted Animal Control to deal with it, but entered before they arrived. The woman came home to find the dog dead and her belongings out in the yard. She was apparently just one month behind on her rent.
