Dog seeks help from neighbor after owner collapses

Monday, August 9, 2010

(08-09) 12:22 PDT Yamhill, Ore. (AP) --

A small dog who refused to return home until a neighbor followed her helped rescue her owner after he collapsed at home following heart surgery. Charles Mitchell said he was working in his yard last week in the Oregon wine country town of Yamhill when an 11-year-old dachshund named Missy scampered up and refused to leave.

Mitchell told the dog to go home, but she refused, and when he decided to follow her across the street to investigate, he found his neighbor, Charlie Burdon, had collapsed inside his home.

The police chief arrived with paramedics, Burdon was taken to the hospital. Burdon suffered an attack of vertigo and is recovering.

But Burdon and Mitchell, who have known each other for years, both said Missy is their hero.

3. Awwww. My dachshund would just sit and chew on my hair if I ever collapsed
in front of him. He's not a stupid dog ...he's just really into chewing my hair.

6. Mine would cry
If we aren't giving them our full attention, they will all cry. I have 3 of them. I can see the oldest doing this, but the other 2 would just sit and cry.

7. They do love to have all the attention! I just told my little one about
the hero dachshund in the story and he backed away from me and began telling me off as only a dachshund can do.

17. Ha! My two dapple doxies would run to the neighbors...
who keep a special jar of dog biscuits for wayward weenie dogs.

18. Teehee!!
Treats are very important to them. My little fellow will walk to the treat cabinet and scratch whenever he feels he's done something treat worthy...which is everything he does to his thinking.

13. It never fails to amaze you the devotion and smartness of dogs
Cats too. When I feel down and have a bad day and curl up in bed, the next thing I know here comes my cat. My son rescued him from under a piling when he was no more than about 4 weeks old. He is very skittish and runs like a maniac when he sees my son coming. But he cuddles in bed with me licks my face nips my arms and when I pet him and snuggle a while he crawls down to the foot of the bed and lays across my feet til I doze. Other times he ignores me, it is only when I am feeling bad he comes to my side.
